Ihe gailg Am EMUIb| Kscape. [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 24 February 1860

Ihe gailg Am EMUIb| Kscape. Captain Thompson, one of the two persons who survived alter the escape t'roui Cawnpore, has written an account of the siege and capture of that place, and of the attrocities committed there. The description of the escape of the fortunate few—four in muuber at first, but two have since died—is very exciting. Assailed by a mob of Sepoys, they took refuge in a temple, which the "mob surrounded; and, having up fagots at the entrance, they cut of their retreat. When the pile of fagots had reached the doorway, or nearly so, they set them 011 lire, expecting to suffocate us; but a strong breeze kindly sent the great body of the smoke from the interior of the temple. Fearing that the suffocating atmosphere would soon be insupportable, 1 proposed to the uieu to sell their lives as dear as possible ; but we stood until the w.ood had sunk down into a pile of embers, and we began to hope that we might brave out their torture until night (apparently the only friend le...

A Baboon Faintly. [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 24 February 1860

A Baboon Faintly. The following curious account of a baboon family is translated from a recent i French work, by M. Boitard, for Good- ! rich's Illustrated Natural History : There have been and still are in the j i menagerie of the Garden of Plants, Paris, ; . a number of baboons, and four years ago. ! a female who had a young one furnished one of the most amusing and singular ; spectacles I ever witnessed. She was placed with it in a cage, near the one she i had formerly occupied with several other animals of the same species. The infant I baboon was hideously ugly, but she lav- ! ished upon it the most tender carresses. , When it was eight days old, the door of j communication was opened, and her male ' entered. The mother, seated in the mid- j die of the cage, held the young heir in i her arms, precisely as a nurse would do under similar circumstances. The happy father approached and embraced his mate with French gallantry upon each side of the face; he then kissed the little one...

Jhe Jlailj* A Month Side View of Beecher» the Heu»(lon Preacher. [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 25 February 1860

Jhe Jlailj* A Month Side View of Beecher» the Heu»(lon Preacher. Henry Ward Beeelier is the most remarknble member of a most remarkable family. He is one of those surprises which nature from time to time delights to produce. A bundle of incongruities, it would pu/.zle Thackery or George Elliott to do justice to the varied manifestations of his character. Sense, of a certain sort, he has an abundance. He is witty, eloquent, pathetic, humorous, passionate, vindictive, sarcastic, brilliant—everything but wise. A preacher of the gospel, he is continually dabbling in politics. He has made the pulpit .level with the stage, almost level with the floor of the House of Representatives. A minister of peace, he repeatedly counseled and encouraged civil war. Himself and Greely parted Kansas between theiu, and made a "good thing" out of it. His mind is inccssautly active and never calm. He works at a terrific rate. What with his preaching, lecturing, speaking, writing, traveling and reading proo...
