THURSDAY, APRIL 1. 1976 THE BASTROP COUNTY TIMES, SMITHVILLE, TEXAS 78957 PAGE 11 DIAMONDBACK ACTION — Live rattlesnakes provided the community of Noack with the f National Rattlesnake Roundup this last weekend. Rattlesnake Roundup by Richard Moree NOACK-Not everyone had fun this past weekend at the National Rattlesnake Sacking Championships which were held at Noach, 12 "miles from Taylor. The sacking event saw six individuals bitten by dia- mondback rattlers last Sunday. The rattlers managed to send three of the sacking contestants to the hospital. Most of the rattlesnakes used in the contests were col- lected within a 50 to 75 mile radius of Taylor, according to Gene Raesz, a member of the Taylor Jaycees, who sponsor the annual event. The snakes were unusually active and alert since the weekend was warm. Pos- sibly, because of the alertness of the rattlesnakes, the risk factor for bites ran high, causing the six con- testants to be bitten during the competition. For those of you w...

PAGE 12 THE BASTTOP COUNTY TIMES. SMTFHYILLE. TEXAS THURSDAY t. MfTfc Smithville Mayor Serves Dual Role SMITHVILLE In a re cent interview with Smithvilte Mayor Albert Crawford, his first remark was that he felt that a Mayor actually served as a city manager and mayor in a dual capacity. He explained this by adding that he performs all duties that a city manager would normally handle as well as being the chief exec- utive officer of the city. As4 Mayor, Crawford staled, much of his time was utilized by serving on many boards. He has served five yfears on the CAPCO (Capitol Area Planning Council) board. In addition. Crawford said that he has served as Regional President for the Texas Municipal League, district 10; as a board mem- ber of CAHS (Capitol Area Human Services); on the Library Board; the Com- munity Action Board; on a steering committee of 30 cities to wort with the LCRA on electrical rates; and with the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation. APRIL I, 1976 County School Board Candidates Speak Out Bastrop Rathman Joe Lee Rathman is a rancher and part owner of the Lockhart Livestock Auction. A life-long resident of Bastrop, he has served on the school board for several years, and is running unopposed for reelection. What special contribution can you bring to the board? I've been there as iong as anybody, and I feel like I understand the workings of the board. What do you think is the district's greatest need and how yould you meet it? We need to get the new building program all brought together. And we need to get the district running a little smoother. It's grown pretty fast, and we need to get it all brought to- gether. How will you solicit input from the silent majority in the community? I think the board brings the feelings to the meetings from the majority of the people. They talk to people everyday, on the street and around tow...
