books Intersex guardian Straight, married dad Jeffrey Eugenides' awesome imagination brings fictional androgynous hero to life; Pulitzer winner visits Dallas to discuss 'Middlesex' By Daniel A. Kusner Life+Style Editor MIDDLESEX MAN: As part of the Distinguished Writers series, Eugenides speaks at the Dallas Museum of Art on Friday. It's difficult to sum up Jeffrey Eugenides' second novel, "Middlesex." But "impeccable, breathtaking and hilarious" are a good start. An epic tale that traces three generations of Greeks on two continents, the saga winds from the small Greek village of Smyrna to the crime-ridden streets of Detroit. At the center of "Middlesex" is ■ Calliope Stephanides, who at 13, learns she's actu- ally male, which is due to a particular recessive gene. Smart and sensitive, Calliope is a fabulous creature and one of the 21st century's greatest narra- tors. And Eugenides never treats her like a freak. His first novel, "The Virgin Suicides," was adapt- ed and made into a ...

life+styl sports Getting kicky Team Dallas soccer player Sean Faulkner trains for Gay Games As the thermometers in North Texas hit the mid-80s this week, folks are taking advantage of the warmer temperatures to restart their outdoor fitness routines. But plenty of Dallas athletes beefed up their training regimens months ago in order to prepare for the Gay Games VII in Chicago July 15-22. A silver medalist who competed at the 2002 Gay Games VI in Sydney, Team Dallas soccer player Sean Faulkner has been training about six hours a week. And now that it's starting to warm up, he's adding regular bike rides around White Rock Lake and making efforts to eat healthier, too. The Dallas native started playing soccer when he was 10. He keeps his goal-kicking skills intact by playing with the Oak Lawn Soccer Club. A founding member, Faulkner has been with the gay and lesbian club since 1995. And since Dallas doesn't have other gay soccer clubs, the Oak Lawn team plays mainstream teams in the me...

The BIG one is back. which follows Route 112 between the towns of Lincoln and Conway and traverses the very heart of the White Mountains. It's an especially dra- matic drive during the fall foliage season. Many of the best restaurants in the White Mountains are inside inns and hotels, so consid- er some of the lodging recommendations described later in this article when deciding where to eat. Other hot spots for terrific meals include the Red Parka Pub, a great place for barbecue ribs, in the village of Glen; the Woodstock Inn, which has a microbrewery and a more formal dining room; Jackson's Thompson House Eatery, known for inventive contemporary American food; and the funky and inexpensive Muddy Moose in North Conway, where you can nosh on salads, burgers and chops. Hew Hampshire's only lesbian-exclusive resort, the Highlands Inn, has been serving the community since 1983 and consists of a main inn with 13 guestrooms, a farmhouse with five guest rooms and a full kitchen, and a sec...

MAD HOT FOLK Known for their impressive musicianship and polyphonic harmonies, Connecticut folk trio Mad Agnes prove that when it comes to performing, talent trumps equipment. Composed of multi- instrumentalists Margo Hennebach, token les- bian Adrienne Jones and Mark Saunders, Mad Agnes toss together everything from Celtic and Renaissance harmonies to traditional and '60s- style folk, along with a healthy dose of humor to create a show that's short on filler but long on entertainment. Fun is of foremost concern for this group, so don't expect any history lectures of dull dirges when this trio hit the stage. Instead, be ready to see three artists functioning seam- lessly together, creating beautiful music that's as surprising as it is heartwarming. — Gilbert Garcia Uncle Calvin's Coffeehouse, inside North Park Presbyterian Church, 9555 N Central Expressway. Letting off steam and preparing important arguments with friends will help, but avoid those arguments unless they are absolutely necessary. By Jack Fertig VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 Don't argue with your partner about problems around the home. Take a creative approach and suggest constructive solutions to areas of con- flict, even if they're only a temporary fix. Otherwise, agree to start analyzing problems so they can be solved later.
