The JJaihj DENIHON. SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 7 187^. Houston's Quarantine Agaii at Galveston, Dr. Rutherford, health ofiiccr at Houston, quarantined the city against Galveston on ihe 4th inst. The reason given for this was the fact that the health board at (i .lives- ton had declined to permit the Mor- gan steamship New York to enter the port. Dr. Campbell, Galveston health officer, assures the puMic "that there had been no discrimination against the Morgan Line, but that the line had been favored more than anv other; that the steamship New York was left out only because she had re- cently been at the infected port of New Orleans ; that she had not left New York city, and no hardship was imposed on the Morgan line be- cause they were notified in advance, of her sailing that she could not come in. He invites the most scru- tinizing investigation of all the acts of the Galveston Board." On the 5th a conference commit- tee of Galveston and Houston busi- ness men met at Clear Creek. After a f...

HI < \ i > * f, t * > r i ♦ *. - * . K ? r ' JTw I IIB Thought it Made 110 Difference. "That tenon does not fit the mortise by ft quarter of an inch,1" said an em-j ployer to a young carpenter who had i just begun to work for him. "I thought that for a garden gate you would not be partioular, and it j would make no difference," answered the young man. But it did make a difference. It made just the difference between the young carpenter having a steady sum- met job at good wages, and having his timo unoccupied on his hands. The employer found no further fault; but when the gate was finished he paid the maker without another word and dismissed him. The next day there was another man in his place. He hap- pened to be a man who thought it did make a difference how every thing was done; ho always did his best; and kept his situation to the end of the season. So it happens. Frequently some lit- tle thing, which was not expected to at- tract attention, is nouced by soma one to who...

?v fy ■ ®hc §ailg pews, DKNISON. SUNDAY MORNING. WAS IT SUICIDE I Two men. One, John Norton. You all know him, John Norton, the Trapper. The other—well, 1 don't know his name. John Norton didn't know it him- self. You see the man came into his camp one day—coming up the llac- quetie in a boat that was as old and broken to pieces as himself—came into the camp one day in the morning, com- ing up the Raequette; and he went out of it before the next morning by the way of another river that most men dread to sail on, but which seemed to him pleasant enough—at least pleasant enough to seek it; and it is about this other river and the way the man launch- ed out on it, and why he came to do so in the way he did—a rather abrupt way, perhaps, some would think—that I wish to tell you. I said I didn't know his name. That doesn't matter, perhaps. At the two extremities of life names signify little, provided the circumstances are of a certain class. What does it matter what the name of a babe is ...

There are gallons of carbolic acid lying about, and burning tar and sul- phurous fumes befoul the air under the profession of purifying it. When I look out on the dark, silent street, and these vapors are wafted through the open window, I feel the oppressiveness of the presence of the death with that horri- ble odor of carbolic acid which rises from the little saucers beneath the cof- fin. It is a city without a people, this. The echo of my music, as I whis- tle to keep my courage up, comes back in a sort of wail, that jars on my ear. It is almost as bad as ...
