NOVEMBER 23, 1972 RIO GRANDE HERALD PAGE 25 Dear Consumer L Don't Be Taken In Holiday Giving By Virginia Knauer ' • Special Assistant to the President nd Director White House Office of Consumer Affairs The holiday season is just around the corner, and with it are many requests from charitable organiza- tions asking you to give "in the Christmas spirit." Most requests come from worthwhile organiza- tions. But there are still handful of questionable groups trying to take unfair advantage of your generosity. To insure that you con- tribute wisely, here are a few pointers to keep in mind when you're asked to give this holi- day season and in the months ahead: • Don't give until you know the facts. Top Teams In Thanksgiving Tilts NEW YORK 'What a difference a year makes! Just one Thanksgiving ago, the Nebraska-Oklahoma game at Norman, Okla., was being touted as the Game of the Cen- tury, featuring as it did the 1-2 teams in the country. This time, just the Big Eight championship—and a lot of per- sonal pride— is at stake at Lin- coln, Neb., since 8-1 Oklahoma is only ranked fourth and de- fending two-time national champion Nebraska, 8-1-1, is no better than fifth. Nevertheless, Oklahoma's Chuck Fairbanks says it "doesn't look a lot different than last year. Nebraska's style of play, though, is a little bit different. Their offense is more wide open. Last year, there were times when they'd just keep running straight at you and it was difficult to get the ball away from them. Now, they're more of a big play type POWs from page 24 gestion." American Consul Harry M. Carter, official liaison with the prisoners, said: "It's a matter entirely up to the Vietnamese. I don't see how a c...

.. ti (HOSPITAL from page 1) Starr County by a 5 to 1 major- ity approved a bond issue au- thorizing $400,000.00 for the county's share in the construc- tion of the new hospital. Num- erous trips were made to Aus- tin and a presentation was made before the Board of Health speaking on behalf of our ap- plication for Hill Burton Funds. A sample bill was prepared and sen! to our representative in the legislature at Austin asking for the creation of a hospital district for our com- munity. On April 19, 1971, Dr. Peavy informed us that the Board of Health during its meeting on April 18, 1971 was unable to ap- prove our application. Shortly thereafter our state represent- ative informed us that he had been unable to introduce our legislation for a hospital dis- trict because of the heavy dock- et pre-existing and thelatedate of our request. Most of the members of the hospital committee became dis- couraged but did not give up. Individual members of the Board of Health were informed of the...

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 1972 THE RIO GRANDE HERALD PAGE 4 FIRST DAY OF ISSUE Inaugurating the UNITEO STATES POSTAL SERVICE JULY 1. 1971 A Letter To The Editor According to the Rio Grande Herald,a gigantic step has been taken towards resolving the problems hampering the construc- tion of a county hospital. In planning this hospital, outside of the water district, a de- tail, a sewage disposal problem was left out of the master plans for the hospital and therefore the funds for this small item was not included in the bond issue. This over-sight created a prob- lem; lack of funds. A spokesman for the water district board members has an astounding idea to resolve this problem. He would cut the Gor- dian Knot by saddling the constituents of the water district with a bond issue. He will have you paying taxes to two officers in- stead of one. The water district and the hospital district are separate entities. One is a small district and the other a county wide one, with the power to tax eve...
