Northern Miner. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1876. [Newspaper Article] — The Northern Miner — 9 February 1876

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1876. We are glad to notice that the Townsville Times adopts completely the line of policy we recommended in a late issue, namely, that the northern and central members should unite and form themselves into a "league defensive and offensive," and go into the Assembly with a definite pro- gramme of action in order to obtain Financial Separation and Local Govern- ment. That is the ticket, and we would invite our northern contemporaries to unite upon it. The Cleveland Bay Express is, we believe, at one with us on the subject. The two Cooktown papers     have not pronounced emphatically as yet in favor of this ticket. The Mackay Mercury fully accepts it. The Port Denison Times stands alone in insisting on Territorial Separation, pure and simple. We would ask our contemporary to weigh this argument in favor of letting Separa- tion sleep awhile. The Government have promised Financial Separation and a Local Government Bill next session. Ther...

Correspondence. Gold Monopoly. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — The Northern Miner — 12 February 1876

Correspondence. Gold Monopoly. TO SHI SDITOB Sib,-I wept with a parcel of gold to the Baok of Ifew.South Wales the other clay, asking them to forward' It to the Mint for me. To my ear* prise, I was informed that they were under an agreement with a certain assayer here, and could not do so without his charges being paid, el* though I "required no advance on the gold. I tried another Bank and met with a like result, and was assured that all the Banks were in the same position with the assayer in question. Now, Sf this is not a deliberate insult to every miner, and claimholder here, I do not know what it u { and 1 think it high time that some new Bank be invited to start a branoh on this place, or, at any late, that a gold buyer be asked to visit the field and. relieve the monopolisiue Banks of a lew ounces of the gold they are unable to forward to Sydney, even on account.
