"THE CITY OF THE HILLS." [Newspaper Article] — The Blue Mountain Echo — 10 July 1909

? 'THE CITY OF THE HILLS.' A few weeks ago a contributor to our columns jocularly referred to Katoomba as '' the City of the Hills,' and we are not disposed to cavil at the reference, but rather incline to the conviction that it was a very happy title. That Katoomba is destined to be the great commercial centre of the Blue Mountains few will question who give the subject the least consideration. It is far and away the largest and most impor tant place at present, and is growing at a pace unthonght of a few years ago. The sewering of the place is in process of con struction, which alone is an indication of the importance and rapid growth of the town, added to which is the construction of buildings designed to keep pace with the times. The price of land for building pur poses is now greater than ever, and the demand for business sites is increasing daily. A few of the Sydney merchants are turning their eyes to Katoomba as a suit able place for a branch of their city business or a plac...

Chapman-Alexander Mission. [Newspaper Article] — The Blue Mountain Echo — 10 July 1909

Chapman-Alexander Mission. The closing' week of the now famous Chapman Alexauder Mission in Sydney was responsible for some of the: most remarkable demonstrations which have ever been witnessed in the city. The Mission, which has just completed its fourth week's work, has been attended by unprecedented audiences at all the services, but the climax was reached at the farewell meetings, where the1 scenes which took place win live in me memory or an mose present. Great crowds assembled three or four hours, before each meeting commenced, and often it seemed that they would break down all resistance to their attempts to enter. Toadies were seen to offer liberal payments to such officers of the law who would secure them a seat, and this means being of no avail they would drop to their knees and im plore the officers to give way and allow them to enter the Town Hall . But the police stuck man fully to their duty, and as each building was filled the doors were closed, and disappointed thous...

He knocked according ly at the door, inquired if Friend Aminadab were ' at home .and if he could see him, The housekeeper said: 'Walk in, friend, and he shall see thee.' The bailiff, delighted to have got this success was directed to wait ; but after waiting an hour he became impatient, rang the bell, and said to the servant: 'Thou promised ine I should see Friend Aminadab.' 'No, friend,' answered she. 'I promised lie should see thee. He hath seen thee, but he doth not like thee.' ?K % X Mrs. Naberly — 'Can you give me a good receipt for sponge cake?' Health and Beauty Hints. This is a little Series which should be really useful to a great many people. [Newspaper Article] — The Blue Mountain Echo — 10 July 1909

Health and Beauty Hints. This is a little Series which should be really useful to a great many people. Breathing exercises are the best treat ment for 'saltcellars.' Brittle nails should be rubbed with vaseline every night, and cut rather short. Borax, in the strength of a desertspoon ful to a pint of water, is excellent when the hair is greasy. Pvor the chronic knee-swelling, popularly called 'water in the knee,' try painting with liniment of iodine. A small teaspoonful of bicarbonate of soda to a tumblerful of hot water will relieve heartburn if sipped slowly. . By visiting the dentist once in six months the teeth are preserved for years, and the health is indirectly affected by the state of the teeth. Decayed teeth will cause anaemia, in digestion, and constant headache, because poisonous matter is constantly being ab sorbed into the blood. For colds, influenza, etc., take one tea spoonful of the following mixture thrice daily: Compound tincture of camphor, syrup of tolu, oxymel ...
