Vineyard Society. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 7 April 1849

Vineyard Society. A meeting of the Vineyard Society was convened for Tuesday last; but at the hour named only three or four individuals besides the Hon Secrotaiy, were present, and consequently no proceedings were en- tered into. Tue Hon. Secretary had pre- pared a lengthy report which, that it should not be lost to the public, our contemporary has given publication to, but as the Society may now be considered defunct, we do not consider it -«ould be advisable to trumpet forth any production which has not receiv- ed adoption. AVe exceedingly regret that this Society which, if properly conducted and supported would undoubtedly have proved of much benefit to the colony, should thus, by the supineness of the pub- lic, be allowed to share the fate of all the other "Western Australian societies. It ai'gues ill for the community that even a free institution does not find support amongîsl us. and thai loo, one which has for its object the fostering.and encourage- ment, by the .diffusion of...

To the Chairman of the Committee on the Land Regulations. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 7 April 1849

To the Chairman of the Committee on the' Land Regulations. [ Sir,-I have to request the favor of your presenting the under-written to tho Com- mittee, as containing the reasons on which I ground my objections to its proecedings. I am, Sir, Your very obedient Servant, G. LEAKE. Perth, April 3, 184Ö. In entering upon the discussion of the subject referred to them, the Committee do not seem to have taken into consideration the difference of the position in which the colony will be placed in con- sequence of their decision, of whatever character that decision might be, as compared with New South "Wales. In the case of the latter, the con- ditions were imposed upon it without previous re- ference or approval by that colony, and, conse- quently, their Council were privileged to object and remonstrate, a privilego which they fully ex- ercised on various clauses. In this colony a re- verse method has been pursued-the colonists, and the Committee as their representatives, have had the severa...

Australia, we are placed in pos- session of European intelligence up to the 24th Nov., of which the following is a sum- mary: The principal event of the mooth appears to have been the seige and storming of "Vienna by the Imperialist troops. The city was defended bravely for many days but at length yielded to the repeated as- saults and sustained cannonade of the as Bailants. The slaughter has of course been immense. The writ of error in Smith O'Brien's case has been allowed by the Attorney General, and it is not improbable but that he may eventually escape. The Carlist insurrection in Spain is pro- gressing. Quarter Sessions. Before W. H. MACKIE, ESQ., Chairman and a Bench of Magistrates. George Petty, charged with stealing sil- ver spoons and hurdles, the property of John Henry Monger, of York, Innkeeper. John Henry Monger: I missed a quan-   tity of Hurdles from my premises some time ago. The Hurdles were kept in a place out of sight of my house. 1 wanted them for the purpose of training a young Horse with leaping. When I missed the hurdles, a native told me that the prisoner had got them, and that a man named Rey- nolds had carried them awray on a bullock dray. I obtained a search warrant, and was present at its execution on the pre- mises of prisoner. I found there several hurdles, the greater part of which I believe to be my property and I swear that several of them are mine ; I know them by the peculiar manner in which they have been mended. I searched the prisoner's house and found a pair of scissors and the spoons now produced, all of which I swear to be my property...

Commercial Affairs. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 14 April 1849

Commercijal Affairs. -v- j The following passage from the letter of Mercator, published in the Home News of 7th November, clearly explains the disad- vantages producers now labour under, and we call attention to the inconveniences at- tending the receivingwadvances on ship- ments. Not only is a heavy loss sustained here, but the obligation of parties in Lon- don to realise forciblVf depresses the mar- ket ai the time of large arrivals. Merca- tor writes as follows;-"I have but a gloomy account to give of commercial af fairs ; all progresses heavily and slowly in the midst of a superabundance of money, and a consequent decrease in its value, which must now be stated to be from two to four per cent., while commerce lan- guishes, and the prices of all the leading articles unprecedentedly low, and nonre munerative to importers ; this partly arises from the shock credit received last autumn, and twelve months having passed without any attempt having been made to rebuild fresh firms upon ...

THE INDEPENDENT JOURNAL. "Vox populi, vox Dei." SATURDAY, APRIL 14, 1849. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 14 April 1849

THE INDEPENDENT JOURNAL. ." Voxpopulii vox Bei" SATUEDAY^PEIL'Í£l849. -.. THE prevailing belief amongst settlers that instead of progressing this colony is retro- grading, is scarcely warranted by facts. That it is not so flourishing as the sanguine expectations which obtained at its outset, led to many embarking capital and enter-? prise in it, all readily admit, but there are also many who believe that, consider- ing its capabilities, it has progressed as much as might reasonably have, been ex- pected. Unlike a favored more recent settlement, no adventitious chance has turned up to create that great and sudden prosperity, which would alone suffice to fulfil the expectations of many of those who emigrated from the mother country, who, we verily believe, thought they should be able to find large fortunes waiting their acceptance, and were disappointed to dis- cover that the sands of Australia did not glitter with gold, moreover that what was to be obtained, had to be labored for wit...

French National Guards in London. FIEST ABBITALS. Qn Monday, October 22nd, upwards of 400~of the Parisian National Guard, at- tired in their uniform and wearing side arms, arrived in the metropolis, via the South Eastern Eailway. Prom London Bridge a cavalcade of omnibuses and cabs conveyed them to the foreign hotels in the vicinity of Leicester-square ; a great num- ber marching in detached parties attracted considerable curiosity as they passed through the thoroughfares. The hotels in the "vicinity of the Haymarket, Leicester square, ana Regent' street, were crammed to overflowing by the unexpected influx, and many of them were compelled to put up with very indifferent accommodation. One party made their way onto the Seven DialB. Their appearance on this spot soon created a great crowd, amongst whom were two of the Coldstream Guards, who shook hands with "the Parisians, who in their turn exclaimed "Tfíve l'Angleterre«" at which the crowd seemed delighted.
