TURF NOTES. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 15 December 1882

TURF NO TM S. By a. Tout. Emphatically the life of a tout, viewed from either a business or a sDcial point of view, is not a happy one. Eegarded as a business, it involves mush hard work and great self-denial, is only of a temporary na^U'-e, and is ve y bad y oaid. Considered socially, it is — well, a complete failure. 7To one, I suppose, ever takes to touting from an innate love of horseflesh — ao, indeed ! The Daily News. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1882. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 15 December 1882

. THURSDAY, DECEMBErTsTiSSzT' Whatever may be said in favour of the intentions of those enthusiastic men who time after time witnessed such a sigual defeat in thoir efforts to establish an institution for a more advanced system of education than that afforded by our State schools, the greatest credit is due to tho Governors and all concerned for the manner in which, from its first initiation, the High School for Boye in this city has steadily progressed. One of the most assuring proofs of its vitality is to be found in its sound financial condition.^ Notwithstanding a very considerable incidental expenditure, last year, amounting to something over -£l',000, there was a net saving of about ten per cent., and, by the extinction of certain items of disbursement, as from the commencement of the present year, the nest returns will in all probability be very much more favourable. Hitherto a large expenditure for rent of premises suitable for class-rooms, masters' residence, and lodgings f...
