The Sunbury News. . Be Just and Fear not. SUNBURY, SATURDAY. AUGUST 5, 1893. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 5 August 1893

Be /us! a: I! ri"r ')f. SUN2BURY, SATURDAY. AUGUST 5, 1893. Tahs nunicipal eletAio s are coming near, and the last dav to nominate will be Wednesday up till 4 o'clock in the afternoon. Councillor Evans, the re tiring member, and Mr Duncan, of Holden, are the ornly likely candidates for the West Riding, each of whom claim to be meoting with sub stantial support front the rate p yers throughout their canvrassing, and bo:h are consequently fully confluent of suceres. For the East Riding Co un cillor McAulifiE retires by efiluion of time, and he will probably be met in the field by Mr Doolan of that district. We do not desire to individualise, but the ratepayers should be careful in their selection, and give the preference to those whom they consider the fittest to occupy the position in every respect-- in stamina, practicability, and demeanor. Truly, very little has been done, compara tiv.ly speaking, in the shire during the past I, months, and the important township of Snnburty, with ...

THE CUT UP ROADS. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 5 August 1893

THE CUT UP ROADS. c Some fev weeeks ago we drew at- s tention to the deplorable state of: the f Mount Alexander Road, which was cut h up with the excessive traffic of teamsters b1 heavity laden with timber and merchan- P dise for Castlemaine. Maryborough, and Bendigo : also the Ballarat Road. At the same time we hinted at a, return to ' .the old tuinpike system,-, and dwelt on t the injustice of expecting municipal E bodies to keep these roads in repair. Since then we notice various. shires 1 appealing to the Government for aid. ' The Melton Shire Council waited on the ti Minister of Public Works on -Wednes- ' day, and asked for monetary assistance- d in maintaining-the roads in thalrmuni- c cipality forming portion of the main n .roads to Ballarat and Bendigo.. which t6 were being destroyed by the heavy ri traffic on them by teamsters carrying . goods to those cities in consequence of t] the idnrease' in freights on the railways. < M" r Staughton, M.L.A., said that g Mel...

FOOTBALL. SUNBURY V. LEOPOLD. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 5 August 1893

FOO.TBALL. SUNBURY V. LEOPOLD. A match was played on the local ground on Saturday b'tween the Sunbury Seniors and a teaii fronm Mel bourne styling themselves the Leopolds. The weather was exceptionally fine, in fact the best experienced here during the season, which- greatly added to the enjoyment of the game. Owing to the final acceptance of engagement not reaching the secretary, Mr J. Mounsey, until Friday night, a few prominent Sunbury players could not attend.: Immediately after the ball was set in motion the Leopold goal wr s laced in imminent danger, the Sunbury boys. playing the little mnirks to a nicety. The shots for goal were quite numerous, but-for a time unsuccessful, Rtigg not being up to his usual form, as he was re covering from an illness. However, after a few behinds were scored. he succeeded in placing the leather oval fair between the sticks. The Leopold backs were again hard at work, as the ball was kept-hovering all round their posts. Sweeney obtained a mark wit...

CONCERT AND BALL. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 5 August 1893

CONCERT AND BALL.   A concert and ball, in aid of the funds of the Sunbury Football Club, was held at the Mechanics' Hall last evening, and although the night was dark, and a cold blast blowing, the attendance was large. Everything was carried out to complete satisfaction under the guidance of the popular secretary, Mr Mounsey, and Messrs W. Ealie and R. Eadie. The artists and artistes were, without exception, of Melbourne   fame, and we cannot let the occasion pass by without thanking the genial host of the Commercial Hotel, Mr R Eadie, for being the means of securing the     services of these talented people. Mr P. Eadie, the favourite old president of the club, was also in attendance, and during the evening took the opportunity of thanking the vocalists and partici pators of the entertainment. He upheld the noble and manly game of football in toto, but considered the local club should have arranged more matches during the season...

YANKEE YARNS. THE ARIZONA KICKER. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 5 August 1893

YANKEE YARNS. THE ARIZONA KICKER. A few weeks ago we felt it our duty as a conscientious editoir to re'sr to Col. Dan Skinner, who runs the whisky ranch on the other bank of I'Plum Creek, as a man whose absence from this locality would be of great benefit. We haven't time to look back through our files, but we probably added That he was an un hung villain whose -case had somehow been overlooked. The Colonel saw- the item and buckled on liis gun to pay us a call. The nearer he git to us, the stron ger grew his feelings that he -was about to monkey with a landslide two miles long, and he finallystopped and turned back, and sent for Lawyer Hamilton. We were informed yesterday afternoon that we were about to be sued for 50,000 dollars damages, and we mounted our mule and rode over to the ranch. The Colonel saw us coming and got away on his burro, but we run him down at the end of a mile, aiid had a talk with I im. He not oDy assured us in the most emphatic .language, that he had never e...

CASTOR OIL. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 12 August 1893

CASTOR OIL. This is undoubtedly the safest laxative for ch;ldren. Half a teaspoonful may be given to a baby under a year old, and two ter.i )onflr's to a child of six. A good method of administering castor oil is to put two tablrspoonfuls of iced water in a small cup (an egg cup is very suitable), then pour in the oil c7-efu'.y, not touching the sides, and it will form a ball in the wa'r·. Let the child suck a piece of ice eid theu trke the oil; the taste will sc-cely be perceived. Another way is to pour the o-' "to a iittle } m":k which has previously bcan flavor c I with a few drops of peppermint. Cas',roil shorld be glven in cases of vomiting r-d diarrhc-a r-is&ug from undgested food. For consti pa:lon only, a sratll suppository made of a strip of ordinary white soap as thick as a Irad pencil, and shaved to a po'it about ri inch long, is far better than the oil.

MEDICINAL VALUE OF VEGETABLES. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 12 August 1893

MEDiCINAL VALU EJF VEGETABLES. Asparagus is a str,,tg diuretic, and forms part of the culre for rheumatic patients at health re.sorts. Sorrel is cool- "'" ing, and forms part. ,f the soup which the French order after a tiring journey.. .-. Carrbts contain a Ouantity of sugar, so are avoi "id by some people, while others think them indigestible; but it is only the yellow core that is difficult of digestion the outer layer being quite tender. Theo::gi:e onion is rich in alkaline elements which :J:: counteract rheumatic gout. If slowly stewed in weak broth, and eaten with a little pepper, it is an admirable aisicle of diet for patients of sedentary habits. The stalks of cauliflower have the same value, but are often so ill-boiled and unpalatable that few persons would make part of their meal to consist of so uninviting anarwcle. Turnips, in the same way, sre often .. thought to be indi.estihle, but the fault lies with the cook quite as much as with the root. The lettuce has a slight na...

R Ieception RHome. ARRIVAL OF OUR BOYS. HOME SWEET HOME. GRAND MILITARY DISPLAY AND CONCERT AND BALL. As prognosticated in our last week's publication, the movement to give a reception ball at the drill-room, Ruperts wood, to the members of the Victorian Horse Artillery on their return from England next week, by the inhabitants of Sunbury and the: Battery, was quashed by the committee on Saturday night, through insufficient support from the townspeople. The Battery sub scribed £12 adnd Sinbury only £8. The. committee generally were loud in condemning the action of the to.vnship in failing to give the project its hear tiest support after amnalgamating with the Battery.
