The Ayrshire Downs Arson Case. The trial of the men arrested a month or two ago at Rockharnpton was commenced at the, Brisbane District Court on Tuesday, before Judge Miller. All the prisoners were ar raigned together, and the court was densely crowded. Mr. H. E. King, Crown Prosecutor, with Mr. F. A. Fezz, appeared for the prosecution. Mr. Fitzgerald, barrister, of Long reach, defended the prisoners. Mr. Fezz in a long address opened the case, narrating the whole of ihe cir cuinsttsuces according to fhe evidence of the Crown witnesses given in the lower court. Evidence was then called and when the court rose the case was not concluded. Our readers will remember the cir cumstances of the case as published in this journal some months ago, and many no doubt will watch with in terest the ultini .to result of it. A shower gave us 30 points, and appearances indicate more to follow, so that a good season is con fidently looked for by the farmers. 'Wool and Sheep Stealing.— At the Quarter Sessions, on 4th inst., John Supple was charged with the larceny of a bale of wool from Kikiamah, but as one of the witnesses did not appear the case was postponed to the next Court of Quarter Sessions, bail being allowed. Importing Shropshire Sheep. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 9 June 1896

Importing Shropshire Sheep. A very valuable consignment of Shropshire sheep was recently received by the Hon. Thomas Brunton, M.L.C., President of the Victorian Royal Agricultural Society. They consist of a very handsome ram and ten of the choicest ewes. The ewes include Mr. Finn's first prize winners at Lord Tredegar's Show and at the Ludlow Show last year, and others from Messrs. Foster, Harter and Bowen Jones, well-known English breeders. The ram was procured from the flock of Mr. A. S. Berry, who has long been celebrated as a prize-winner, and the whole shipmenb was specially selected at considerable cost with regard to their good fleeces and uniform character. — ' Farmer and Grazier.' Young Pat : ' I say, dad, one of my fowls has laid an egg every day for the past fortnight.' Old Pat : ' That's nothing ; I laid a foundation-stone yesterday.'

Stock inspectors [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 9 June 1896

Stock Inspectors A good story is told by the 'Queensland Observer,' of the in efficient and incapable men that are sometimes employed as Inspectors oi Stock. Here is the story : — ' The aj.;-.' jinu'uciiC of new sto.sk inspectors has given the m.m on the street au opportunity o? ni.-ikin^ some harsh remarks about one uowmuient. One young gentleman who is now a gu-irdian of ili« 21th pura'i^l oi latitude against the dreaded tick is said to know as much about stock as a monkey does of diamond drills ; but then he is well connected, and that is supposed to have made all the difference. Just to show how one of these new officials looks at the business, it is stated that a friend happened to drop upon him as ho moved along to take up his work. ' Hallo, old man, where are you off to 1 ' was the natural question under the circumstances ' Out West, ' was the reply, just as naturally made. ' What for then — out West isn't your line, is it 1 ' ' Well,' was the meditative reply, ' I am one of ...

Gossip. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 9 June 1896

Gossip. A great German scholar once said that 'The good God made the world, but the devil made the insects.' That was rather hard on the insects, but it is jusb about the style of some human beings, who fancy that the whole universe circles round themselves. We human beings are the most egotistical insects on the earth. Did you ever read Balzac's ' Honorine 1 ' In it he says, ' If the French have as great an aversion for travelling as the English have ,a propensity for it, both English and French have sufficient reasons. Something better than Engiand is everywhere to be found, whereas it is somewhat difficult to find the charms of France outside of France.' I've heard Frenchmen say the same thing myself, not as well, perhaps, but they meant exactly the same thing. That's where their egotism comes in. But they are no worse than we are ourselves, not a little bit. In fact, I honestly think that we are the most shockingly egotistical race on the face of God's fair earth. Look at me, fo...

Steiger (Leutewitz) Merino Sheep. Ex "THERMOPYLAE. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 9 June 1896

Steiger (Leutewitz) Merino Sheep. Ex ' Thermopylae. Over 80 years ago the great grand father of the present breeder of these sheep (Otto Steiger) bought his ewes and rams at Klipphauson, Saxony, which were descended from :he pure bred flock of merinos drawn from the best breeds of Spain, and since then the Steiger family, attaching a high value to the breeding of pur*3 merino sheep, have endeavoured to improve the flock. Their aim was to grow a serrated wool upon a fine, tight and elastic skin, spread over a big fleshy body. The characteristic qualities of super fine wool consists in its issuing from the skin in small semi-circular bends, and continually growing in such bends up to its points. Several of these tufts of hair unite in small skeins, and I some of the latter in staples, by which the characteristic serrated wool is per fectly expressed. The smaller this serration and the narrower its bends the finer the wool, buc the longer the bends the coarser the wool. This ser ration...

Bourke Show. THE WESTERN PEOPLE. II. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 9 June 1896

Bourke Show. THE WESTERN PEOPLE. By the ' Globe Trottkb.' II. I like Bourke and Bourke people, I and the reason why is curious. It's j this way. Once upon a time I landed i in an Arab town, on the coast of the | Mediterranean Sea. We went close to the beach in a small boat, and the yelling Riffs came out into the water and carried us ashore in the dark. Then we had to find our way through the ill-smelling slums amongst the hooded, silent Arabs, between high walls, and amongst mysterious sounds and weird silences. It was uncanny and awful, and made me think that the best fun in travelling is when you get home and lie about it. In the midst of my melancholy and, maybe, morbid meditations I heard the meiow of a cat, a poor derelict of Arab life, and — I laughed. I wanted to shake hands with that cat, it sounded so English and home-like and miserable. My word, but it was good to hear it ! That cat reconciled me to the sur roundings and changed all my views. Well, I didn't hear a cat in ...
