AN ARCHITECTURAL CURIOSITY. THE HIGHEST BUILDING IN SYDNEY. [Newspaper Article] — The Farmer and Settler — 18 April 1906

AN ARCHITECTURAL CURIOSITY. THE HIGHEST BUILDING IN . SYDNEY. When occupying the position of Minister of Public Works, Mr. E. W. O' Sullivan in one of his dreams of the future, pictured the marvellous effect which might be se cured by .a statue representing 'Australia facing the dawn,' on Fort Denison rock, which has such a commanding position in Sydney Harbor. No doubt such a statue would be a wondrous ornament to the harbor, and would excite, the attention and curiosity of travellers coming to Sydney by sea to an extent which could not be gained in any other way. In a more prosaic .manner Marcus Clark and Co., Ltd., have provided an object of fas cinating interest to city visitors who ar rive by train. Reared on a triangular block of land; and immediately facing the new railway station, stands their new nine-storeyed building, 1 50 feet high, and so advantageously is it situated that it is probably the most conspicuous piece of architecture in the city. During Show week it has str...

THE ROYAL SHOW. UNIQUE EXPOSITION. UNPRECEDENTED SUCCESS. [Newspaper Article] — The Farmer and Settler — 18 April 1906

THE ROYAL SHOW. UNIQUE EXPOSITION. UNPRECEDENTED SUCCESS. Easter in Sydney would miss much of its attractiveness if the Annual Show cf the Agricultural Society of New South Wales did not form one of the engage ments of the holiday time. Country folk, particularly, have for many years held the season and the event in close association, and it is safe to sav that not one-tenth of the country men and women who visit the metropolis at this season . of the year would make the trip if there were no ex hibition. Even when the Show had de generated to a mere shop display, when more attention was paid by the promoters to the desires of the Sydney warehouse men and shopkeepers to make a brave parade of their ordinary articles of mer chandise, than to the placing of the ex *™ hibits of an educative character to the v-vXa men on the land — and that time is not very ^av^* *ar back in the past — country visitors con f tinued to patronise it in crowds. They Vjl complained loudly, of course, that t...

THE LABOR THUMB-SCREW. [Newspaper Article] — The Farmer and Settler — 18 April 1906

THE LABOR THUMB-SCREW. Addressing the North Sydney Federal Labor League, Mr. Watson said that Mr. Deakin's programme at the present junc ture was 'in' a state of transition, if. in deed, it existed at all.' The Labor party had a right to be informed of Mr. Deak in's intentions before it entered into any agreement. The Prime Minister had de clared that the question of Socialism was one for the States, and before the Federal Parliament could deal with it there would have to be an alteration of the Constitu tion. .Therefore Mr. Dcakin was now to be asked 'whether he would alter the Constitution, in order to make it possible to nationalise one or more existing mon opolies.' One particular inquiry which the Labor party had to make was concern ing 'his intentions as to a progressive land tax to burst up big estates.' This indicates that Mr. Deakin is about to be put into the Trades Hall torture-chamber and have the labor thumb-screw applied' to him.
