MELBOURNE NOTES [FaRo OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] It is a queer thing, but nevertheless true, that o- f the: two parties which alternately sway the destinies of- .th British Empire the. so-called Liberals are the greatest bunglers ofthe two. MARKET POULTRY. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian — 22 June 1894

MARKET POULTRY. y Mr, Clias. Phillips; President of the Ballarat Poultry and Dog Society: S( Contlinued.) It is.essential that great-care. must I also be taken in selecting breeds to cross, for when one: breed lacks in any quality that you aim at,.in the other it should be preponderant. Without blaz ing it forth to the poultry world, I have made numerous experiments: in, cross breedig, and with very:pleasing results, and I will enumerate some of the crosses that I have made :---My first. experi meent was made some twelve years.ago,: ith a:Spanish-Cochin cross.' I got some' large, good-layingc'Spanish hens, such a.-s we seldom= see among .:our .modern, Improved -:hirds, and mated them .witI a. Buff .Cochin.- cock of good size and lubstance, and the result was a good all ?oui'd fowl, and what was to me a'urprise, was their uniformity of .color and tyjpe'. The cocks-were, in, .most.- intatices, heavier :than their father, with less feathers, slight feather ing on legs, and a nice tail,...

CORANDERRK v. HEALESVILLE. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian — 22 June 1894

CORANDERRK V. HEALESVILLE. The above match was played on the   Healesville ground on Saturday after- noon last, a large concourse of people being present to witness it. The local team proved too good for our friends of Coranderrk, nevertheless they played a really good and plucky game. Mr. C. T. Dow, of the V.F.A., gave every satisfaction as field umpire, while Mr.. R. Wandin, sen., was in his accustomed position as goal umpire, Mr. Davis being his vis-a-vis, and Mr. J. Bancell acted as time-keeper. The ball was set in motion at about 18 minutes past 3, and for a consider- able time neither side appeared to gain any advantage, as the play was prin- cipally from centre to wing and back again. Eventually the oval was car- ried close in front of the Coranderrk goal. Here Mitchell had a mark of- fered to him, but he failed to hold it, otherwise a goal would have been a certainty. Becker shortly afterwards had a shot for goal and scored a behind, Hook taking a place kick nex...

Local & General News. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian — 29 June 1894

Local & General News. There was not much business to trans act at the meeting of the local Water Trust on Monday last. In the absence of the.Chairman (Mr. E. 3. Hall), Com. Nichols was voted to the chair. A letter was received from Messrs. 3. and T. King asking to'have a service pipe laid f;oi tibhe"main to their property, which-was received. From the Rail way Department, intimating that the Trust's- claim dof £25 had been for warded to the Treasury for payment. From the' Treasury, intimating that the sum of £100 13s. 3d;, interest, was now due, and £70 was passed on account. :The Shire Council at is meeting on Monday last went into conimmittee to consider the matter. of the neglect of :the' engineer to have specifications prepared for three of the contracts which 'were to' have been let at that meeting. . The Guardian. PUBLISHED FRIDAY MORNINGS. FRIDAY, JUNE 29, 1894. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian — 29 June 1894

PUBLISHED FRIDAY MORNINGS. FRIDAY, JUNE 29, 1894. WE are neither rabid protectionists, nor rabid freetraders. We.; are-not0 .prepared'to support Mr. Trenwith and 100 per cent. import duties,.nor.are.we desirous of making Melbourne a free port. There is a medium in all things though, unfortunately, in this colony we are a little too apt to go to extremes, and that, too, on the wrong side. IWe do not believe, for instance, in levying enormousI duties upon -foreign manu factures under the pretence of fostering local industries when, if we did not do so, we could obtain a better and cheaper article from outside, and leave our own people free to follow some other calling. A casein point, is the spirit duty. Under the pretext of giving employ "ment to our own people-we -.levy -a differential spirit.duty. That is to say, we impose 4s. a gallon' more uponi iri ported spirits than we do upon local distillations, and the Treasury' loses nearly £400,000 a year by that process. Of course, the l...
