TOPICS OF THE WEEK. LATE PVTE. CLAUDE MEMBREY. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 7 April 1917

,TOPICS OF THE WEEK. LATE PVTE. CLAUDE MEMBREY. At the Northcote (High-street) Metho dist S.S. on Sunday, the Hon. W. H. Edgar unveiled a photograph'to the late Private Claude Membroy, second son of the Hon. J. G. Membrey. Mr Edgar said the young man whose memory they were honoring was born in Northcote ; he was edocated and trained in a Chris tian home, passed from his home to the Sunday School, became identified with the Church of God, and displayed un mistakeable tokens of his ability and worthiness to take his position in lifo. This beautiful young life of scarcely 20 summers had finished as regards this world. The influence and example he had left was something to emulate, en courage and inspire. On January 28, 1916, he left Victoria for Egypt. From thence he proceeded to France, and was killed in action about August 18. "So in your name," concluded Mr Edgar, "coupled with your tenderest affections, I.unveil this photograph, which will re main here in the Sunday school."

BOWLS. IVANHOE RECREATION ASSOCIATION." A GOOD WIN. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 7 April 1917

SBOWLS. :VANHOE RECREATION ASSO CIATION. Notes by " Sir Francis." A GOOD WIN. I am under a debt of gratitude to ny "Junior," who has so ably con ributed notes to your columns during ny absence. Of course, I had'to have he "News" posted to me luring my iolidays, as I wanted to keep in touch vith the district, and that was the nly way I could achieve it. Last Saturday the convincing ground was it Ivanhoc, and the opponents the epresentatives of the Preston A sec tion. Preston are real good per formers, and although I was under the impression that Ivanho would just about win, I did not anticipate such a substantial victory as to the extent of 30 points. The first match in this tourney-the Jika Jika should have been played by Ivanhoc at Preston on 24th February. All matches on that day were cancelled on account of the Win-the-War Sat urday celebrations. J. A. King, of Ivanhoe, met Arch. Wilkinson, and for seven, ends the scores were seven all. Afterwards the Ivanhoc man put' on a lot of...

DETERMINED TO BE THERE. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 7 April 1917

DETERMINED TO BE TIHEERE. The interest taken in Fairfield in Cr. May's candidature is becoming keen. The Progress Society meeting being over early on Tuesday evening, a number of members went to Northcote to hear the candidate's opening speech. When they arrived at the hall they found the doors barred, and unable to get in on account of the crowd. They eventually ham mered at a back door, and when some one came to see what the noise was about, they said "We are members of Mr May's Fairfield committee." "Then come right in," said a Northcoteite, and they were rewarded by getting standing room on the stage.

An Appreciation. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 7 April 1917

An Appreciation. A gentleman writing from Eng land to his sister in. Fairfield-Mrs. Lucas-thus refers to the Australian soldiers: " Tell every one, .and you know that I can assure them, that we all say " God bless Australia for the real help they give so un grudgingly to win this hateful but righteous war." For the first time in 1000 years "the Heavenly Classic," as the Chinese Mohammedans call the Ko ran. "r to be translated from the Arabic into common Chinese. " What were the causes of.the martyrdom of Stephem ?" was one of the questions put to candidates at the last Scripture examination of the London Union. In one of the papers returned by a ten-year-old child the answer was: "Stephen told a very long speech to the Jews, so they took him out and stoned him." A Melbourne policeman of good standing and large experience was asked his opinion as to the benefit of six o'clock closing " Things are 90 per cent. better in every way. r .-.- ""'-" will bc no return to the old times,"

Then Laugh. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 7 April 1917

Then Laugh. a Build for yourself a strong-box, Fashion back part with care; When it's strong as your hand can make it, Put all your troubles there. Hide there all thought of your failures, And each bitter cup that you quaff; Lock all your heartaches within it, Then sit on the lid and laugh. Tell no one else its contents, Never its secrets share; When you've dropped in your care and worry, Keep them for ever there. Hide them from sight so completely, That the world will never dream half ; Fasten the strong.box securely Then sit on the lid and laugh.

IVANHOE AND ALPHINGTON PROGRESS SOCIETY. The annual meeting was held at Ivanhoe Hall on Monday, April 2, 1917, Mr. J. H. Robinson presiding. There was a good attendance of members. The president explained, the cause. of delay in holding the annual meet ing, and also spoke avery stronigly on the apathy that xvas shown by the majority of fhe ratepayers in regard to local matters. He also explained what had been done in connection: with the conference of\ Progress So cieties of the1 Heidelberg District, and the matters that were intended to be brought before the Shire Couni cil, but, owing to the want of cour tesy on the part of that body," they were not received. ..This treatment gave rise to a very strong feeling of resentment on the part of those con cerned, seeing that they vwere all rate payers of the district. It appears that when it was announced that the de putation of representatives of the Progress Societies. desired to inter view the Counicil on the following" matters, viz,,...
