''Opportunities' for practice dro allowed to pass unheeded, and yoet'they proudly refuse to accept a handicap. We would not refer to this club so particularly, were it not in the interests of the orioketing community of Collingwood generally; for we hope in the futun,, to see a thoroughly representative Collingwood club, and theto are members in the Southern Cross C.C. (we will not particularize) who, if they, had proper practice, would make "hot mom bers" of such a club. ' It is tumouredo that 'the Montague' C.C. intend melting down the cup they won on Saturday last; and casting it into medals for the'purpose of presenting eachi nember of the eleven who have helped to carry off the...

THE DEGENERACY OF MAN. (LIBERAL REVIEW.) [Newspaper Article] — Mercury — 20 November 1875

THE DEGENERACY OF MAN. (LIBERIAL FEVIEW.) 'THERE are people who assert that never has there existed in any country such a happy state of things as may' be found in England at the present moment. Here we are permitted to see man, they tell us, in the enjoyment of all those blessings which wealth, art, science, and a' rational system of religion can bestow upon him. According to them, seldom has a country been so prosper ous as England is now, and rarely has a nation possessed so much intelligence as she does. As a rule it will be found that these sunny philosophers are people of the comfortable sort, that they are people who are rich in the possession of the fruits of a more or less liberal edu cation, and that they possess the means of supplying all their reasonable require ments. Unfortunately there are philo sophers of a different school, who sing a much sadder song concerning the condition of this sea-girt isle. Accord ing to them there is little in its state upon which we may co...

FOOD FOR THE PEOPLE. (GRAPHIC.) [Newspaper Article] — Mercury — 20 November 1875

FOOD FOR" THE PEOPLE. (oadiac.) THAT rinderpest did much harm in this country during its rapid and fatal pro gress for a couple of years is too sadly known to the breeders of .the best of cattle. It was stamped out, perhaps, more effectually in Aberdeenshire than in any other county, but oven in that part of North Britain,, from which the best: animals come to the fat .stock markets in the South, it acted severely upon feeding and breeding stock alike. Deadly as it was, its tavages were less detrimental' to the general welfare of cattle and sheep than are those of pleuro-pneumonia and tile foot-and mouth disease. The amounts of death and deterioration in connection with these' infections have attempted to be calculated,. but most estimates, we should think, fall considerably shorf of the mark. Agriculturists havinig lost so'much for a quarter of a century through those common diseases, it fol lows, as a matter of course, that con= sumers have to pay greatly more .for their meat. It ...
