THE SALARIED DRAUGHTSMEN. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Times — 15 April 1857
Till'. SALARIED DliAUfiHTSMKN. Takinh the results of the last Sedition -into con sideration, we cannot see that tho country has [inmlly benefited by the appointment of official draughtsmen. Some fifty acts would not be cheap purchases at £800 even if they woto well ' gr.t up'' but '-slop lmilu,' iw they svidmilly are, and liable as they must he to cnr.tmnr.: in future repnir than tlio piiee of their ori-mud cunHtruction, we deem them them vory dear bargain* to the Stute. The appointment of salaried draughtsmen was atl error which wc believe next vein- will be cor rected. Hy'such appointment the Ministry sur rendered their power of obtnininn the highest aliill and bust experience on each Hiibject, ami hound themselves to (perhaps) average skill and experi ence in all. SMOKED BREAD To the Editor of the Northern Times. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Times — 15 April 1857
6 M OK K.I) HIIKAD. To the Editor of the Northern Timet, Sin— I beg to forward yon a curiosity, consisting *f a pipe cml'e.iiled in a pottion of a loaf of broad. This sp»ciin-n of baking either argues that tho baker was try* ing '-- light bis pipy at the oven, or endeavouring to m.tku his labours lighter than his bread, hy a nflf direct. Tobacco in tuna* uuy be good, but it is decidedly objtc* tionnMe in rolls. I'rom the ingenuity of a Morpeth manufacturer, thi* new invention has sprung, but I think a great deal of flowery eloquence will be required to render it pa a table to the public tasto. THE MEGETH ON. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Times — 15 April 1857
THE ME04STH ON. An enterprising gentleman of our district — Mr. Clerk, of tiie Burularrah, has just imported one of these machines. -In our columns will he found a detailed description of its formation and uses, and we trust sufficient interest will be shown by the inhabitants of these towns and neighbourhood to induce J\Ir. Ulerk to give them an opportunity of witnessing its operation. « The Megrcthon appears to be a locomotive steam engine, which carries with it and lays down beforo its wheels a temporary tramway similar in construction to the permanent lines of a railway. If the plan be found prac ieable on our rough unforrmd roads Mr. Clerk will hate achievc'l an immense public good. The common rate of speed appears to he. about four miles an hour, a very low rate compared with the railway — but a-vcry high rate compared with the progress of a loaded bullock dray, not so much perhaps in actual-Bpeed as in the result of a day's work We presume ten miles a day exceeds tho average ...
