WALHALLA. Saturday. [Newspaper Article] — Traralgon Record — 3 August 1886

WALHALLA. [From our own Correspondent.] Saturday. On Wednesday evening next the Long Tunnel Fife and Drum band will appear for the first time at a concert to be given in aid of the funds of the band. SFor a considerable time many, of our residents have been looking forward with souie pleasure to the time when the Otlico Ball should be held, and it would seem now that their patience is to be rewarded. A com mittee consisting of Messrs. Witton, Refardt, Tupper, Barrns, Noble and Loan, has been appointed to carry out the arrangements, and the date of the ball has been fixed for Monday the 9th August. Great interest is manifested in the afliir, and its success is assured. Mr. Edward Knersch, an old resi dent of the town, died last week after a long and painful illness. He was one of the oldest miners of the district, and was highly respected on acco,,nt of his modesty and manliness. He was buried on Sunday last, and the funeral was one of the largest seen here. The resident Wesleyan min...

LOCAL POLICE REQUIREMENTS. [Newspaper Article] — Traralgon Record — 3 August 1886

LOCAL POLICE REQUIRE MENTS. On Friday evening last a public meeting was convened by the president of the shire at the request of a large number of ratepayers, to consider the necessity of increased police protection in this township; also, to inquire why the Senior-Constable has been removed, and replaced by a mounted constable. The meeting was largely attended, and Mr Peterkin, the president of the shire occupied the chair, and said: Gentle. men, as you know, the object of this meeting is to consider the desirability of increased police protection, and to inquire why the senior constable was removed from this town and an officer of imnferior grade placed in his stead. Many attempts have been made to secure additional police protection to this town, because it has been seen on many occasions, that one police officer, however efficient he may be, cannot do all that is required to be clone in the maintenance of order. About two weeks ago I got the clerk of the courts to write to the c...

CORRESPONDENCE. SHIRE COUNCIL ELECTIONS.. TO THE EDITOR OF THE RECORD. Sir,-I have olservod in your vahluable columns, several adrertisements from gen tleman who intend to be candidates for seats in the shire council, but the addreses they publish are of the most meagre des cription. I have waited patiently for some time to hear it announced that soome of the candidates at least intend to come forward and orally give their views, but I am afraid they are going to miss the opportunity the season afRlrds them of givilng a stump slxech. Are the candidates dumlb, or only bashful 1 If afflicted in either way, I am afraid they are not fit for the office they covet. As one who has a vote, I would like to hear the candidate "say" what he intends to do. IIoping one at least will come forward, I sign myself RATEPAYER.

The Traralgon Record "MODERATE, BUT PROGRESSIVE." (Published every Tuesday & Friday Morning.) TUESDAY, AUGUST 3, 1886. THE NEW HEBRIDES. [Newspaper Article] — Traralgon Record — 3 August 1886

".MO0DEHATE. SUT PRIOGRESIVE." (Publish5d eve . Tueslay & Fi lay mrnming.) TUESDAY, AUGUST 3. 1886. THE NEW HEBRIDES. Two itemsl of intelligence have reached us lately, the one is of a re-assuring character, and the other is of a dis quieting nature. The former relates to the olficial " ultimatum" of the Inlperial Goverunment relative to the New Hebrides, in which it is emphatically stated that Her Britannic Majesty cannot consent to the handing over of the islands to France, and insists that the agreement between the two nations signed in 1878 he adhered to. The latter information refers to the pro jected exportation of a fresh set of criminals from France, who will he shipped for New Caledonia in October next. If the first matter e 'one of gratulation, as nourishing the pride of young Britishors, the second awakens somethine akin to alarmn il the mind of young Australians.
