The Western Champion. Vita sine literis more est. BLACKALL, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 24. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 24 March 1880

iftc Sfetqit <pam$ioir. j Vita tine Uteris mart at. BLACKALL, WEDNESDAY, MAECH St. THE depression which has for so Jong paralysed commercial enterprise in this colony appears now to be drawing to a close. Already the dark clouds are dispersing, and welcome glimpses of the j aaa of prosperity give signs of a bright future for the country. Never before was there such a disposition shown by ] English capitalists to invest in Aus-j tralian property, and the success of the numerous colonial loans floated in the London market iB satisfactory evidence that the venture is considered safe and remunerative. At the same time we find our two great articles of export, wool and meat, fetching higher priccs than hare been obtained for many years past, with every prospect that the demand will be permanent. There were j a few people who believed that the rise in the wool market at the November sales would prove no more than a flash in the pan, which would be extinguished before the Februa...

My eye, won't it be jolly 1 | You know our school is an awfully good; school, and we con lick the boys of any other! in the colony. We're got our name up I can j tell you, and when we want a thing done wc kick up an awful row till we get it. Some \ of our boys don't pull together well, though, or else we should be stronger than we are. | Sometimes the big fellows fight, and then; they form Bides and go in lemons against j each other. Youjsee, the head boy for a long time was a tali chap named Felix. He aaed 1 to be cock of the school, and had a lot of | fags to work for him. Then a new bay came, i named Johnny, a little butt of a fellow with cheek enough for half*a-doRcn. Now Johnny i didn't like to sec Felix having it all his own way, and so he used to fight him at every j opportunity. The first time they had a...

THE KANAKA BUSINESS. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 24 March 1880

THE KANAKA BUSINESS. TO THE EDJTOB, Srn,-Can you afford mo space in yotil' excel lent paper for a few remarks on Uic Kanaka question? You will? Thnnks. Then in tlie first place I would like to ask the present Ministry if tliey liavc any idea why the British Government goes to BO much trouble and cxpcuBO in colonining their distant pos sessions, such an Australia, New Zealand, &e. Is it to provide a liomc for the surplus popu lation of the ltritish Isles, or {or those of the South Sea Islands 7 I think Uicy must nllow | that it was not for tiic latter. And yet the Kanakas are still finding tlicir way into the | country (much against their will), and the excuse is that European labor costs (no much, ami that without Kanakas squatting would Hot pay. How, I would ask, did it pay in Victoria, New South Wales, and the other colonics, Queensland iiot excepted, before Kanakas were ever thought of, and this to in the face of fiencrnl bad seasons. BRISBANE AFFAIRS. FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT. March 11. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 24 March 1880

BRISBANE AFFAIRS. FROM CUE BPIJCIAL COWiEfirOXDENT, Marcli 11, Thehii is really nothing in the way of news Uoaliug about this week, and we arc depend cut uiiiinly on rumours. Of those pray accept it (ample. Tlio first, mid with the leant foundation, is that Morclicad is going to buy into .die,Courier, and work Buzacott in as manager. Tliift pretty fabrication is built pn. the possibility, or probability of Gresley Lukin .going to Sydney. But I don't think Worchcadhas the money to buy in, and if he had, I don't think the other shareholders would < allow him to boss the concern, and, finally, I am-pretty sure that Buzacott would not be the man he would sclcct to represent his views. John Warde has sold out of the Tdegtepk, and is going to Sydney. Oowlt kUaw, the purchaser, Queen-street to tho lips of bis finger sails, fancies ho knows how to tun a paper, and is bossing the concern. The first innings of the Bobcrtsonians was characterised by the pro duction of an alarming quantity of ducks' eggs, which resulted chicfly from the superior bowling of Messrs, Wadley and Miller, the former taking four wickets and the latter three. The top score in this innings was only six, which Mr. Orchard, with h» usual careful play, managed to run up.
