Historic Holyrood. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Recorder — 6 July 1887

Historic Eloiyrood. It wa3 a chill, drizzly day. It did not posi tively- rain, but it came so near to itastnight woll bo described .13 a Scotch mist. I^sat at the window of my hotel, overlooking.Princes street, Kdinburgh. There were few;. pedes- trians in fiight, and this, taken with theetate of the weather, brought me nearer to sleep than to any thoughts of thebusinessthathad brought mo to the city. After awhile. I re solved to shako off my lethargy and devote the afternoon to ' seeing the lions,' in spite of wind or weather. Full of my now resolu- - — tion I descended to, tho cntrance.haile.l acab, and signified to Jehu that I wanted to go to Holyrood. A short drive through quaint, old fashioned thoroughfares and I was set down in front of tho palace, and was left to my own resources. Indeed, I was left very much to myself, for, with the exception of two sleepy-looking sentries pacing back and forth, I could see no living thing. It was not a gala day in the heart of Midlothian, at...

Mr. Howard's Housekeeping. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Recorder — 6 July 1887

31 r. Howard's Housekeeping. Mr. Howard was by no means a wealthy man, but ho was in comfortable circumstan ces and lived in a neat two-story brick house which was tastefully furnished. His wife was economical and did all the housework herself, thereby saving Iho expense of a ser vant. ' 1 don't seo what you have to do in this house that keeps yon busy all day,' said Mr. Howard to his wife, one morning at the breakfast table. ' I could do everything there is lobe done in one hour.' ' As for cleaning up the. house, I could do it in an hour,' answered his wife, ' but there are the children to tak'ecavc of.' ' That's no excuse. ,- Let the children take c.ire of themselves,' said Mr. Howard, 'as he buttered a roll. Just then the baby, who was unstaird in his crib, commenced crying! MV3. BISTER BILL. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Recorder — 6 July 1887

BUSTER BILL. 11 Ho ! By Jupiter!' said Buster Bill. It might liave sounded harsh from any inhabitant of Gold Kun, but coming from thslips of Busier Hill it was different ; for Buster Bill had deep blue eyes, and his yellow hair curled into a top-knot on bis small, round heart ; and Buster Bill had not yet attained to tlio aye of reason, bcin™ but eight years old. Also, Buster Kill with his yellow top-knot protruding through tho hole in Kcno Dick's cast-off sombrero, and his sturdy little knees smiling through the holes irreconcilable with the idea of harshness as oil with water. 11 By thunder 1 I'll bet you my biggest chispa yon can't do it !' went on Bill deci sively. Tho two persons so unconscious of his scorn would, have made — well, without exaggeva lion, seven ol! him. And they might have been trusted to make seven out of him had they heard his crushing verdict. But Bill, when he woke up in tho old, sunny gold pocket oa tho hillsidu, and - heard the two tough nuts of the camp p...

Jubilee Coinage. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Recorder — 6 July 1887

Jubilee Coinage. Describing the new Jubilee coinage issued in Grent Britian, the 'St. Jame's Budget' writes : — ' With the exception ef the new double florin and tha modernised ' effigy' of the Queen, there is nothing very novel about the coins. The £5 piece simply follows the schedule of the Coinage Act of 1870. and is not a new coin. Its 'laison d'etre' is not very clear, for its currency is only nominal, and only a very small number are minted. The same may be said of the £2 piece. For obvious reas ons, the actual designs of the new coin age are kept secret, and nothing can be stated yet as to the precise time the the issue will be made, or tho amount of the issue. The intrinsic value of the coins will be exactly aB prescribed in the Coinage Act. One or two of the alterations of design may be mentioned. Tho inscription on the obverse of the present sovereign (encircling the effigy) is ' Victoria D G: : Britanniur : Rog : F: D :' On the new one it will be 1 Victoria D1 G. Britt : ...

Pastoral Difficulties in the Far West. No. II. (SYDNEY MAIL REPORTER.) [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Recorder — 6 July 1887

Pastoral DifSculties in the Par West. No. II. (Sydney Mail Rei-ohter.) T have substituted the abovo title for iliat of 'Pastoral Difficulties on the Darling,' the latter being hardly com prehensive enough, considering tho ex tent of country which is my intention to touch upon and the various snlijccts ?which require attention. Since writing tlie lirat letter of this series, somo fur ther facts have come to light regarding the manner in which the Minister for Lands lias raised the routs of pastoral foldings in tho western division. It is fttlmitted on all sides that the Land Act confers upon tho Minister tho |-ower of incroasing rents fixed by the local boards ; but that Mr. Gawott should raise the rents of certain sta tions in such an erratic manner as ho has d.-ne, is strongly condemned by all interested in tho prosperity of the Western division. Tho fact of there ibeing no compensation for improve ments also comes in for a large share of condemnation. Both questions aro of vital i...

That a man who, in the very erfrly days of the col onv. had laboured almost unceasinclv and endured hardships, and had over cotiie obstacles such as only those who were in Victoria1, in the beginning of the fbrties can fr/lly realise, and who had by the exercise of keen foresight and prudence, n( a time when fortnnes were either rapiflly melted away or soon made, amassed property which caused him to be readily recognised as one of the most wealthy of colonists, should end his life in such a manner was con sidered sad indeed.
