John Chamber ' s defines his Position . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 24 September 1853

John Chamber s defines his Position . At the Temperance Convention held in this city a couple of weeks since , the Bev . John Chambers was so overcome by his feelings , or by something else equally as bad , that he made the following extraordinary announcement , in defining his position in regard to the temperance question . I am a whole souled Democrat , but I would sooner vote for the Devil himself than , for a rum Democrat . Just to think of it . A minister of the gospel making use of such low , vulgar language . Some of these crazy temperance people should be talked to before the next election , or we cannot answer for the consequences of their intemperate speeches . Somebody must look out .

i | c Cmf . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 24 September 1853

i | c Cmf . Extraordinary Turf Delinquencies . It appears , from letters recentl y discovered by Mr . Thomas Dawson , that Stilton was drugged last year , for the Northumberland Plate , but not sufficiently so to prevent his winning ; and it is stated that certain * parties — amongst them two or three members of Tattersall s—under , of course , the belief that the dose was sufficient for the purpose , peppered him heaAily , and lost a great stake . It further appears , that extra care was taken of him for the Goodwood Cup , and , accord ingly , in that case the thins * came off . Ofthe extent to which this rascality Uas been carried on it is impossible to say , but there seeins to be no doubt that Mr . Thomas Dawson and his friends , have been robbed to an enormous amount . She took with her a trophy , by way of a second prize in that match , as reported elsewhere ATe regret , for the sake of science , as well as to put the matter at rest , that the asked-for opportunity of a trial with a fresh breeze was not accorded to her so as to enable her spirited owner and talented builder to have tke chance of demonstrating the alleged superiority of the American sloops over our own cutters | in a breeze ; the result of which wpuld bave been decisive and proved satisfactary to the yachting world .
