EMiGr . vriox vt . v Miciiiov ;—A gentleman who was at Chicago last fall , saw a large number of families , from thr- St . Joseph s country of Michigan , wending their way t 0 the upper counties of this state . They stated that it was expected that many follow them . They represented the country I they had left as fine , but as they had come so far they were determined not to stop until they reached the counties in our state , of which report had spoken in high terms . HINTS TO EMJCHIAISTS . —We have given etn article , under this bead , on our first page , which contains important information for persons who design to emigrate to this country . The estimate of the expenses of travelling from the eastern states to St . Louis is higher , however , than emigrants usually pay . A man at our elbow says—A passage from N . York city to Albany , in a tow boat , can always be had for a dollar , and in a family the small children are not usually counteil . The competition among the owners of canal ( transportation , or baggage ) boats , is so great at Albany , that it is not a difficult thing for families , boarding themselves , ( which at all times can conveniently bo done , ) to obtain their passage to Buffalo , for § 3 . On arriving at Bufl alo , a passage in a schooner to Ashtabula can be secured for the same family at one dollar per head . At Ashtabula waggons can be procured at a reasonable rate for the transportation of travellers to Beaver , â...

POTATOES . —Judge Buell , of Albany , an experienced agriculturist , recommends a new plan to prevent the deterioration of potatoes , which often takes place from their being continually raised on the same ground . Tbe recommendation is to select seed of good size , to cutoff and throw away a slice from the seed end , and to cut the residue , in two , three , or four pieces , according to the remaining number of eyes . Its utility is based upon the supposition ( says the Judge , ) and I may say the fact , that where several stocks come close together , the vegetables will be of diminutive size , and that the discarded slice , which has from three to six eyes , may be correctly compared to the tips and butts of the ear of the seed corn , w ich are rejected as useless , because they invariably produce sickly plants . The best potatoe soil is one which is cool , moist and light , such as is afforded by swamps , abounding in vegetable alluvion , and well drained . The seed should not ...
