Ball Bearing Throughout j Every vital operating feature is Ball Bearing in the New Model LCSmithiBrosIypewritcr { ALL THE WRITING ALWAYS IN SIGHT ) Ordinary friction bearings are cheaper to make , but not cheaper in the end . Ball bearings properly made , as we make them , cannot grind themselves loose like common friction bearings . They work smoothly , noiselessly , accurately , without play or lost motion , indefinitely . They can t wabble . Our ball-bearing carriage solves the problem of free-running combined with absolute rigidity . Our ball-bearing typebar segment permits a capital shift , the easiest known , yet thor 6 ughly positive . Our Gardner ball-bearing typebar joint insures , with least resistance , the accurate imprint of the types , in their proper places , always . The ball bearings of the L . C . Smith & Bros . A BERKSHIRE EPOCH [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 August 1910

A BERKSHIRE EPOCH Students of Berkshire history will readily call to mind the several epochs in the development of the breed in America . The first epoch was made by Longfellow 16835 , who should rightfully be known as the father of the breed . An infinitesimally small per cent of the popular Berkshires of today but what trace directly to this epoch-making sire . Mated with Lady Lee 7 th 25107 , he produced Baron Lee 4 th , the sire of Lord Premier , who sired the dam of Masterpiece ; Baron Lee 6 th , the sire of Premier Longfellow ; King Lee 2 d , the sire of the dam of Baron Duke 50 th ; Baron Lee 8 th , the sire of the dam of Lord Premier s Rival . From thismating has come numerous popular Berkshire families , and most of the great sires of the present day are intensely bred in some of these particular families . Occasionally an outcross of . imported blood has been used , as in the case of Lord Premier , who doubtless stands out more prominently than any other of the grand-sons ...

The Big Livestock Advertiser . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 August 1910

The Big Livestock Advertiser . By Zeno W Putnam Some one high up in business journalism recently remarked that the money wasted by advertisers on poor copy was mere car-fare to the vast sums thrown to the winds by men who were not ready to advertise , whose goods were wrong , etc . While this is doubtless true , a study of the advertising issued by some of our biggest live-stock breeders , —men who have the goods in plenty and who ought to be ready to advertise , —inclines one to believe that they are the men who not only pay the carfare but the freight as well . It is a noticable fact that the small live-stock advertiser is , as a rule more careful of his space than his big brother , although a surprising lack of judgment is shown by both . The small man s abuse of his space partakes rather of the misdirected small investment ; the big space-buyer frequently shows the ridiculous profligacy of the wilful spendthrift . In one of the leading live-stocic journals that commands a line-r...

The Summer Silo . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 August 1910

The Summer Silo . The silo as a source of winter feed is a recognized necessity . One of the greatest commendations that can be found for the silo is the fact that those who have used them successfully for one season are putting up the second . If one silo is good they reason two will be better , in the majority of cases these second silos are smaller and are put up for use in the summer . These men have given silage the most thorough trial so that they cannot get along without it any time during the year . It goes into the mangers before their cattle 35 a days in the year and some have testified that the cows will leave rich , luscious pasture for this feed . For years there has been no time when the silo was a greater necessity during the summer than it is this season . The pastures have gone dry very early and if the cows are to be kept up to a good flow it will be neccessary to provide some feed aside from pasture grass . This is most economically done with silage . Soiling crop...

The Ideal Lard Type [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 August 1910

The Ideal Lard Type Berkshires popularly classify as larcb hogs in contradistinction to the bacon , type , as illustrated by the large Yorkshire or the Tamworth . Berkshires--in their well-grown maturity more closely approximate the ideal lard ; typ , e or fat hog demanded by the markets than any other breed . Prof . Wm . Dietrich of the Illinois Experiment Station has had drawings executed showing what he would consider the ideal lard type . To us the picture fits the Berkshire more accurately than any other hog . While the Berkshire excels ali other breeds as a lard type it should not be overlooked that he also makes plenty of the best quality of bacon . Berkshires can be grown especially for bacon production , as we have all of us seen , and personally we prefer Berkshire bacon to that from any other breed . It is of better quality than bacon from the so-called bacon breeds . As a matter of fact , the Berkshire fills the bill whether we want a lard hog or a bacon hog . This is no...
