A TIMELY WARNING FROM THE VETERINARY OF THE STATE AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE Farmers Are Told to Watch Their Herds Carefully for Symp toms of the "Corn Stalk" Disease Experiments Show that the Trouble Comes from a Germ Vaccination May Help. By Dr. T. P. Haslam, K. S. A. C THE VARIOUS localities in Kan sas suffer, from time to time, losses of cattle when they are pastured upon corn stalk fields. Some of these, doubtless, die from eating too much dry and indigestible food, others from diseases which are not in any way derived from corn stalks. However, many cattle die from symp toms so typical that the term "Corn Stalk Disease" has gradually acquired the significance of a disease in which the cattle show prevailingly nervous symptoms. The onset of the disease is sometimes sudden. Preliminary symptoms come on a few hours be fore the severe attack. At first the animals seem to be sluggish and to separate themselves from the remain- In a few instances a germ disease der of the herd. The next s...

There's so ssuch good In the worst of us, and there's so much bad in the best of us, that It doesn't behoove any of us to speak ill of the rest of us. Funny isn't it when a child wrinkles up his face and thinks that his ugly face hurts the ones who see him? The very attitude that a, lot of manufacturers took on the tariff proposition reminds one of a child. When Secretary Redfern said that if they made the assertion that the change or proposed change hurt their busi ness that an investigation would be started, they wrinkled up their faces and said "the government has no business to inquire iuto our private business." If that is so then it "has no business to pro te...

18 IT RIGHT TO ADVERTISE COCA COLAT Men who play the wily game of poli tics have discovered that the best way to distract the attention of the public from their own shortcomings la to make a loud-mouthed sensational at tack upon someone else. As the cut tie-fish eludes Its pursuer by clouding the surrounding water with the con-. tentB of its ink sac, so the political ad renturer takes advantage of the igno rance and prejudices of the people to escape from his indefensible positior by muddying the waters of public opinion. . . PiENiik wheat land RIGHT NOW IS THE TIME TO DE TERMINE VALUE OF NEXT YEAR'S CROP. FIELDS SHOULD BE WELL DISKED This Should Be Done Immediately , After Harveet Even If the Ground le Dry. Listing . Meine Ruination. Wheat harvest Is now over all over 4 the atate and the crop this year fur nishes an excellent object lesson, as to the dollars and cents value of the proper preparation of land to be plant ed to wheat. Wherever the . fields were properly prepared last year, the crop suffered no Injury from the short period of dry weather which occured Just before harvest. Where the wheat, was planted in a poorly prepared seed bed, there was no moisture reservoir to keep the plants during the dry period and, therefore, the crop was badly Injured. With Buch an object lesson before them, farmers should try to plant all wheat on a properly prepared seed bed, this fall, ami right now is the time to begin to prepare such a seed bed. i- SPLIT IN SIGHT Democrats, to Be Congratulated on Cohesion and Ability. 'Statesmanlike Handling of the Tariff and Currency Questions Seems to Have Astonished and Disgust ' ed Republican Opposition. It was Inevitable that the senate should make many changes In the tar iff bill. Generally they are Improve ments. It Is a matter of course that there should be sharp controversies ibetween the branches over some of the differences. The house and sen ate were deadlocked for ten days over the reciprocity provision In the Mo Kinley tariff. There were serious di visions between the two branches over the Payne-Aldrlch bill. Nor Is It probable that the adminis tration currency bill will go through without a dissenting Democratic vote. It goes too far for some and not far enough for others. But at no point Is there the slightest evidence of a break In the Democratic party over either of these matters. Of course, this 1b a surprise and a disappointment to the Republicans, and they are not conce...
