(Z Wt gjmftj Mfmm ASTORIA, OREGON: THURSDAY.. .OCTOBER 30. 1881 SMUGGLING ON THE SOUND. Advices from British Columbia stato that in defiance of the customs laws, smuggling is being carried on between that province and the United State3 on a gigantic scale. The most profitable part of the trade is found in smuggling opium, tobacco and fancy goods into Washington ter ritory from Victoria. This is done at a large profit, as in the item of opium alone the duty is $10 per pound, and the Chinese will readily take all that can be run in. The cap tain of a steamer plying on Puget Sound, who appears to be well ac quainted with the habits of the smugglers, states that those engaged in the business find no difficulty in running goods from Victoria into Washington territory. He says that the oustoms officers are few and far between, and that there is little to hinder a boat from loading opium or anything else in any port of Puget Sound. He reports that there is a regularly organized business in...

-?&?' I) U gmtt IMtoran. ASTORIA, OREGON: FRIDAY. OCTOBER Bl 1884 NOT VERY LIKELY. With considerable venom and ac rimony in the present presidential campaign has been mingled a good deal of fun, affording occasion for considerable hilarity to those on the back seats. And now at the eleventh hour comes My Lord Eoscoe Conk ling, Bometimes senator from New York, and would-be dictator of the Empire state. The latest is an alleg ed intent on the part of Boscoe Oonk ling to talk in New York in oppo sition to Blaine's candidacy. Eighteen months ago he predicted Republican defeat in the presidential lection of 1884, and ascribed the de feat to Eepublican repudiation of him and his counsels. He also in formed a sorrowing publio that the defeat of Grant and the third term idea in 1880 had "set the country back ten years." Mr. Coukling spoke then, and speaks now, with the natural asperity of a man who knows that he will figure in our political history solely as the baffled leader of a cons...

ra Sfe SH ctoratu ASTORIA, OREGON: SATUEDAY NOVEMBER 1, 18SJ 1 GOOD THING. It is complained that "we foave too much politics;" that all this whoop ing and talking and explanation and charges and connter-charges has "a demoralizing effect on the people." Some whose writings we have recent lj noticed even think that we oughtn't to have elections so often; that it upsets the people, injures trade, encourages demagogueism, and they argue that as a nation we are going to the dogs because of the frequency of elections and political excitement. It is not to be denied that frequent elections may become fruitful sources of political evil; a man may have too much politics as be might have too much sleep, or work, or en joyment, or anything else, good or bad, in this world. But those who claim that stagnation is the better form of politics, reason from a wrong standpoint Wo Americans are a free people. As a matter of business, apart, from any sentiment, it pays to be free; we can live better, ...

Well: the great contest is only two days off, and by the time this issue reaches some of our suburban readers the presidential election of 1884 will have been decided. It has been a curi ous cam paign. The issues have been the bloody shirt, the tariff, the private lives of the candidates and the ques tion of a change. In all these which have been fought with vigor and per sistence the Democrats have had the worst of it; in the fight next Tuesday they have the best of it as far as odds are concerned. They need 48 vetes: the Republicans need 201. The ques tion is where they are coming from. If the Democrats get New York and Indiana they've captured the works and will inaugurate Cleveland If the Republicans carry New Jersey, Connecticut, Indiana and Ne vada they can let the Empire state cast her vote for the Democratic can didate and still seat Blaine next March. 4- C?l Ite gaits storfm ASTORIA, OREGON: TUESDAY NOVEMBER 4. 1SS1 Has any ono heard from John Kelly. Tkouble is feared at the polls in Chicago to-day. Mr. Hekdbioks is fond of shrimps. Not the political variety, however. Butler's voice is growing hoarse, although he is as frisk' as a yearling colt. Mr. Bhike is six years older than Governor Cleveland, but not so hand some. If there be such a thing as special Providence, to-day affords an excel lent opportunity for its display. Wili Blaine get 100,000 votes in New York City? On the answer to that question depends the result of the fight. The curtain rises on the last act of the great presidential drama. Let us be glad that it doss not end in a tragedy. The Massachusetts state commit tee of the People's party have issued their last address, in which they claim 70,000 votes for Butler in that state.
