cities recognizing this to be a market good for the community and beneficial to the city at large," Jolly said the influx of new gay travelers would be a boon to the city. "The GLBT market is obviously a group of people that travels a lot," Jolly said. "They travel frequently, and they spend a lot of money when they travel." The website touts Dallas as having some of the best shopping and dining options in America. Gay travelers who come to Dallas the first time will generate even more interest, Jolly said. "They are influencers because they go back into their workplaces and their family units and say, 'You would not believe what is going on in Dallas — great things,"' he said. Michael Doughman, executive director of the Dallas Tavern Guild, said the gay bar association expects to see a boost in business as a result. "We expect to see some significant response from it over the summer," Doughman said. "We're very excited that it has finally come to fruition, and it is as well done as...

t I m Heath Ledger gave an incredible performance as a cow- boy forced to stifle his love for another man in Brokeback Mountain," Benshoff said. other two queer films come out in the Oscar count? It's hard to say, Beshnoff said. "I would love to see 'Brokeback Mountain' win," he said. "But I have been talking to the film critic for the Los Angeles Daily News, and he says there is a groundswell building for 'Crash.' There are still some old-timers in the Academy who wouldn't want to give the best movie Oscar to a gay movie. But they can give it to a movie about race issues." Beshnoff called the "Transamerica" script "a little formulaic." But he said that Felicity Huffman turned in an Oscar-worthy perform- ance. Still, "a lot of people are leaning toward Reese Witherspoon," who played June Carter Cash in the Johnny Cash biopic "Walk the Line." Then there's the big showdown for best actor between Heath Ledger in "Brokeback Mountain" and Philip Seymour Hoffman in "Capote." Hoffman was g...

BIG EASY Continued from Page 1 Orleans resident Volney Hill. "Also, most people usually crash with their friends and 80 percent of the houses are gone, so their friends aren't here either. "So, I think this is actually very promising," Hill said. "People are going to get here one way or another. I have more people staying with me this year than ever. I pretty much serve as a hotel right now." Rafael Maldonado, who came in from Mobile, Ala., for his 15th Mardi Gras, agreed that crowds were smaller. "It's usually packed full of people throwing beads here," he said, standing in front of Cafe Lafitte in Exile, one of the city's oldest gay bars. A local resident, Reuben, who didn't want to give his last name, said he didn't mind the small- er crowd. "It's more tolerable. You can get around," he said. A local drag queen, D.L. Broadway, agreed. "Sizewise, I'm loving it," she said. "I like to spread out. I like my little space. I'm loving it because the city's making its money back." It was...

West Virginia may halt birth record changes Proposed law would prohibit court-approved gender changes By Lawrence Messina Associated Press CHARLESTON, W. Va. — Fears that West Virginians who undergo gender-reassignment surgery might test the state's ban on same-sex marriage prompted changes to the state's vital records system that the House of Delegates unan- imously passed Tuesday. Among its numerous provisions, House Bill 4565 had originally allowed a court order to change a birth certificate following such surgery. But the House Government Organization Committee amended it to block such a change, even if approved by a judge. Since birth certificates are used to obtain mar- riage licenses from county clerks, some commit- tee members cited the 2000 state law that defines marriage as being between a man and a woman. "The question was, could they use a new one to get around the law," said Delegate Ron Walters, a Republican. "That raised some eye- brows." With Walters as the lead spon...

inalnews NATIONAL BRIEFS From Staff and Wire Reports Historical commission won't allow church to hang gay rights banner QUINCY, Mass. — This city's historical com- mission has denied a request by its "Church of the Presidents" to hang a large banner in support of gay marriage on the front of the edifice. The Quincy Historic District Commission raised objections about the banner's size and pro- posed location on the United First Parish Church, one of the city's most important landmarks, The Patriot Ledger of Quincy reported. The 34-foot-by-4-foot sign reads "People of Faith for Marriage Equality." Commission members stressed that their objections were related to the banner's technical dimensions and possible aesthetic effects on the historic facade of the church, home to the crypts of Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams, and their wives. There was no discussion of the sign's message or political content at Monday's meeting. Bill easing Florida's gay adoption ban possible in s...

South Korean army discharged 8 gays in 2005; all said they were gay South Korea's army discharged eight people in 2005 after they disclosed that they are gay, the Korea Times reported on Feb. 17. The army bans soldiers with abnormal sexual identities, the newspaper said. Gay groups recently urged the military to try harder to protect gay conscripts from anti-gay abuse or to offer them an alternative form of mil- itary service. 'Brokeback Mountain' wins British 'Academy Awards' in 4 categories The gay-cowboy movie "Brokeback Moun- tain" won four awards from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts at a ceremony held Feb. 18. The awards are the British equivalent of Oscars. The hit film received honors for best movie, best director (Ang Lee), best supporting actor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and best adapted screenplay. Rulings in cases on student newspapers threaten free press Supreme Court's decision in Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier set the stage for high school, college papers to censor content on GLBT issues Freedom of the press. It's something most of us take for granted. Sure, there are always some right-wingers complaining about the- "liberal press." But their complaints are counter-balanced by those on the left who see today's mainstream media as dic- tated by political and corporate interests. But unless you view the media with a critical eye, which most of us really don't, you probably consider freedom of the press as a given in our democracy. It is, after all, guaranteed in the First Amendment of our country's Constitution. I've come to expect my local daily paper to provide balanced reporting about the LGBT community — believe me, they hear from me and other members of my community if they don't. I've also come to expect a free flow of infor- mation about the community from the myriad LGBT med...

I ife+sty lescreen Oscar's got a boyfriend It's a queer year for the Academy Awards. Betting on Huffman, Hoffman and 4 'Brokeback' wins, Steve Warren makes his annual predictions By Steve Warren Contributing Film Critic "Brokeback." That's where mine is. Philip Seymour Hoffman will be hard to beat for best actor. Besides having given an amazing performance, he's one of the most respected actors in the business. Incredibly, "Capote" is Hoffman's first Oscar nomination (although he's won countless other awards for a variety of roles). Heath Ledger's repressed gay cowboy is neck-and-neck with Joaquin Phoenix' country singer for second place. Which reminds me: This article could have been called "Oscar Goes Country," what with the "Brokeback" cowboys, the country music of "Walk the Line," Dolly Parton's nomination for her "Transamerica" song and "Capote" taking place in Kansas. It's unfathomable that Felicity Huffman's "Transamerica" transsexual lost the Screen Actors Guild best actress...
