Although successful in that field he decided he did not want that as his life-long career. After much prayer he changed his major to English. Now a professor of English he feels that students have changed somewhat over the years. In his opinion students of the '90s are less politically active than those of the 60s and 70s and less mate- rialistic than those of the 80s. He feels students today are more concerned and realistic in their outlook as they begin to real- ize they may not make a luxurious living. " Complacency is less evi- dent.as their happiness in life be- comes more important than money and they realize this generation may possibly have less than the previous one" Brunner assesses. However despite possible vocation difficulties in the future ...

The list and con- cepts of new technologies devel- oping is growing at a geometric rate. In the near future Americans will be exposed to a variety of innovative services. Banking and managing stocks utilizing travel services and video classified ads are just some of the things that may exist in the average Ameri- can home in just a few years from now. Of course that depends upon a number of factors. The biggest issue is economics. According to Raymond Greenwood an Area Manager for cable giantTCI many things are technically possible now it is just a matter of creating and servicing a market for various technologies. For example Greenwood noted a demonstra- tion in Dallas of a system capable of remotely controlling lights and other electronic devices in the home. The price tag was $20000. To the casual observer this may seem like an expensive luxury. What happen...

IS Arts & 'Entertainment 2ZS 1993 The major problem in trans- lating this drama to the screen has always been destroying act divi- sions and singleness of locale which dominates most theatrical work. Shakespeare should be the easiest dramatist to film success- fully: he used the scene not the act as his basic unitforplotdevel- opmentand considering the abrupt changes of locale and wide diver- sity of action his plays bear far more resemblance to a film sce- nario than they do to a modem work of the theatre. Ironically enough successful Shakespearean films are few and far between. But in 1968 Italian filmmaker Franco Zeffirelli of- fered a new version of Romeo and Juliet which sparkled as brightly as any Shakespeare had ever done on the screen. HARDIN'SIMMONS U N I R I S 4SJW !!!' November 11 1993 Abilene Texas Vol. 81 No. 10 Nothing Funny About Painting Your Face Black College Press Service Former lovers Whoopi Goldberg and Ted ruffled a lot of feathers last month. At a Friars Club roast honor- ing Goldberg her "best friend" Danson appeared in blackface makeup with large white lips and told racial jokes. The Friars Club is an enter- tainment industry group. Roasts are a say-what-you-like any thing- goes affair at which the guest of honor is the object of crude and vulgar jokes. After being "roasted" the guest of honor then gets to retaliate. But at Goldberg's party some people weren't laughing. Among those who criticized Danson's actions were New York City Mayor David Dinkins and talk show host Montel Williams. Williams walked out seven minutes intoDanson'smonologue and terminated his club member- ship. No one can decide right or wrong for another no one can tell me what is right for my life. We have learned the phrase MI have my rights. No one can interpret truth for my life except .me. We have been taught that intolerance is the same as preju- dice and oppression. Narrow-mindedness is ugly and ignorant. We have been taught that we live in a "pluralistic" society. We have to compromise our ideals be open-minded be tolerant that is what America was based on. We have been pushed so far that we have now come to the point that the preemi- nent right the most important truth in our society is that of per- sonal liberty....not God's Word. There must be a standard of truth by which to solve this conflict The word of God is the Standard of Truth for the Christian.
