CANBERRA HIGHLAND SOCIETY AND BURNS CLUB. ANNUAL GATHERING ON 26th FEBRUARY. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 February 1927

CANBERRA HIGHLAND j SOCIETY AND BURNS CLUB. ANNUAL GATHERING ON 26th FEBRUARY. The annual gathering of the Canberra Highland Society and Burns Club will be held at the Acton Recreation Ground on Saturday, February 26. The committee of the Society are working hard to ensure the success of the gathering, and there is every evidence that, given a fine day, the Scotsmen of Canberra will eclipse all previous efforts in this regard. The Goulburn Pipe Band will be in atten dance, and a most comprehensive programme of piping, dancing, Scotch games, track and field events should give visitors to the ground a fine afternoon's sport. The juvenile events will commence at 10 a.m., the piping cham pionship at ll a.m., followed by the national dance competitions at 12 noon. During the afternoon, the track and field events will motor cycling and horse-racing. The entry forms for the various events may be obtained from the energetic Honorary Secretary of the Society, Mr. A. Stuart, 101 Causeway. . "...

THE LATE MR. COMMISSIONER GORMAN. AN APPRECIATION. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 February 1927

THE LATE MR. COMMISSIONER GORMAN. AN APPRECIATION. "As one by one we come, so one by one We pass through those dim portals, op'ning on The vast new worlds beyond the range Of human vision, spirit-lit and strange." Tragic and unexpected, the news of the sudden end of Mr. Commissioner C. H. Gor man gloomed the Canberra atmosphere as darkly as a sudden thunderstorm. Once again the unseen Hand introduced itself into the sphere of human activity, with startling and disastrous effect, plucking from Life's busy stage one who was playing a most im portant part in the great project that the Commission has been created to carry out, and, with the casual indifference that Death displays to human affairs, taking from the scene one who could least be spared. Not a long resident of Canberra in terms of time, the deceased Commissioner had nevertheless been with us long enough to surround himself with a wide circle of friends, whose love and admiration for him grew as the days sped on, for in his v...

PARLIAMENT HOUSE. OFFICIAL OPENING IN MAY. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 February 1927

PARLIAMENT HOUSE. OFFICIAL OPENING IN MAY. Keaders will have learned from Press announcements by the» Chairman of the Sub Committee of the Commonwealth Cabinet, Senator Pearce, of the broad lines of the pro posed arrangements for the official programme which will be followed on the occasion of the visit to Canberra of T.B.H. the Duke and Duchess of York in May next. It will have been observed that available accommodation, both residential and in respect of the viewing of the ceremonies involved, is limited, and that the Government is therefore constrained to limit the official invitation list. Nevertheless, appreciating the desire of many members of the public to visit Canberra and combine a view of the external ceremony at Parliament House with perhaps subsequent sight-seeing of the city area and Territory, provision will be made by the Commission at the instance of the Government for certain parking and camping areas. The Social Ser vice Council was recently the recipient of an in...

ST. JOHN'S AMBULANCE CANBERRA BRANCH. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 February 1927

ST. JOHN'S AMBULANCE CANBERRA BRANCH. This Branch of the St. John's Ambulance Association held their second meeting at the Fire Station recreation rooms on Tuesday evening last, there being a splendid atten dance of members, under the instruction of Messrs. Smythe and Naveau. Stretcher and bandage work was the object-lesson, and very great interest was shown by the class. The work has its humorous as well as serious side, which was demonstrated when the stretcher party had to lift a supposed patient who was 18 stone in weight. The Canberra Branch has a great future before it, and the more we have in this com munity who will take an interest in first-aid to the injured and qualify for their Certifi cate, so much the better, for they are indeed rendering social service. This Branch is fortunate in securing the Fire Brigade recreation room, which is ad mirably suited for the purpose it is in tended to serve. The Committee of the Brigade is to be comemnded for their action in granting t...

WIRELESS NOTES. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 February 1927

WIRELESS NOTES. (By " Potentiometer. ' ') While listening to our old friend Static on my hideous piece of a contraption called a wireless set, I can hear a crank with an asth matical B battery trying for all he or she is worth to tune in. The date is 17/1/ '27, 9.52 p.m. A beautiful piece of music spoilt, and the culprit who tried to get it missed it. So did I to a certain extent. The pen is laid aside until 23/1/ '27. A good church service on the air from Melbourne .-a very good reception until 8.30 p.m., when trouble starts again. A good band and a per former on the piano. The item is spoilt with persistent screeches and howls. (Fading has been very noticeable at Can berra, and is caused by users of sets being in close proximity to each other. The fading is particularly noticeable when the user of a set alters adjustments and puts it into oscillation.) At 9.30 the reception of music and speech becomes much clearer, the howls are gone the culprit has left it alone and gone to bed i...

CANBERRA PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 February 1927

CANBERRA PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY. This Society has been making serious and steady progress, and attendances at Thurs day evening rehearsals have been increas ingly encouraging. An ample supply of new and appropriate music is forthcoming for immediate prepara tion; also the Causeway Hall has been ten tatively reserved for the next concert (on 25th March). Advertisements elsewhere fully explain that the above Society, has been offered the unique privilege of participating prominently in the musical programme arranged for the opening of Parliament celebrations. The nature of such a performance will naturally have to receive the final approval of the Commission. It is therefore especially incumbent upon all old members, and those now introduced, to attend rehearsals regu larly, and in the proper spirit. MOW TMCN W MCR.E.& Y NÜM&tC

MUSIC (?) AT WHITE CITY. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 February 1927

MUSIC (?) AT WHITE CITY. Yes! There's no doubt, in our section, we've a wonderful collection Of instruments and blokes who try to play. And every evening after dinner every jazz mad, noisy sinner Gets going-and some well-known tune will slay. Just at present someone's strumming on the piano and humming In doleful key, "Norwegian Cradle Song"; In the horse pugs cooking galley, just behind us in the valley, A cornetist's on "Croajingolong," And right next to where I'm camping there's another joker vamping On a concertina, "Back to Mandelay"; While just off a little distance, with remark able nersistence. A flautist's memorising "Sligo Bay." Somewhere else a na wie's singing, in a hoarse voice, "Bells are ringing," Another's "On the road to Gundagai." Down the lines a fiddle's wailing "Over Moon light Bay we're sailing," A banjoist is playing, "Tell me why." Now, I'm not exaggerating, but the truth just simply stating, Last night I took a walk around the tents, And from the Campbell's ...
