Local and General. You will need to keep an eye on your watch for that last drink today, and henceforth. Starting from this evenirjg, one of the things the tem perance party has been aiming at for years comes off. All hotels and Ii-. censed houses must close at 6 p.m'. for the sale of fermented or spirituous liquors, but soft drinks-that is of under 2 per cent. alcoholic strength may he sold, provided the bar is closed. Can anyone beat this? Mr. P. M. Starling, of Ngallo, is milking a cow which has 'not had a calf, nor has shee gone off her milk in sir years. Not only is she still milking, but going well, for the squeeze pro duct gives 6 lbs. butter per week. We know some men who would fall down and worship that beast, but the trouble is there is no chance of the. phenomenon p.ssing it on-she won't have a family. Many of our readers will take ad vantage of the opportunity to see the country and enjoy a day's sport by attending the pionic gathering at Yellumjip. The program is at tra...

Victorian Farmers' Union. CUYEN BRANCH. [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail — 25 October 1916

Yictorian Farmers' Union. cUYEN BRANCI. There was an exceptionally large gathering at the meeting of the above on 14th inst., Mr. H. W. Pickering presiding. A?mong a large quantity of corres pondence was a letter from the Wa ter Susply department, stating it was not corsidered advisable to spend money in putting down bores in the vicinity of Ouyen, as the expense was so gieat, and it was intended that the area proposed to be bored would shortly be supplied with much better water, and at a much lower rate, per channel.-This reply did not satisfy the meeting, as the re quest was'not for a series of bores, but simply one or two experimental ones, whereby should water even suitable for stock be proved, there would be at least a standby in times of scarcity such as-you may re member-we have had in, the pat. This view will be again urged on the department. The Railway department regretted very much that it could not graet any reduction in freighlit on Masilee stumps. They say that while t...

WHAT CONSCRIPTION MEANS. [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail — 25 October 1916

WHAT CONSCRIPTION MEANS. Sir,-In your last issue, a corres pondent from Tempy essays to ins truct us as to the meaniug of Cons cription, the definition of whichb, as it will be applied in Aunstaalis, he is. ignorant of himself. If his ability to do anything else may be measured by) that with which be attempts to.handle this subject, I think if the majority of "ants" are of the same calibre and undoubtedly many, if lnot most of them are-then the introduction of a few aliens, colored 'or discolored, will not make much ditfference if en listment for compulsoy, service (which will terminate when the War ends) abroad fails, beciuse> tiost of the inticonscriptionists are either proGerman, curs, or of the I.W.W. (I won't work) order. I?. any case, none of the thinge stated by your corresp.tndent is going to happen, But it will happen that the.-e cravens will be cold shouldered when peace comes and when our boys return from victory. IHun, waster, shirker, and car will then be paid in ful...
