IS WOMAN SUPERIOR TO MAN. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 30 June 1899

IS WOMAN SuPEREIOt R TO MARs It is a debatable question *hsther, in the hours of afflictioa or adversity, woman exhibits more fortitude than maln. As is somewhat natural, the partisans of either sex will not heat anything to their disadvantage ifron the opposite. Almost numberless in stances codld be given of the heroin fortitude displayed by both men and womten in hours of sulfering or danger, But one will sutlfce, and it is that nt Mrs. Susan Shute, of 351 Fitroy-sttweut, Fitzroy, Melbourne, who; before she took Bile Beans for Biliousness, had borne the most acute pains of theu' matism with a resignation that malt would do well to imitate. T'his is her story as related to a reporter of the " Melbourne Mercury ".= " For four years I sufflored so severely from .rheumatism that freqttently I was scarcely able to move. I could not do my housework, and as I am advancing in years, the doctor told me that I was incurable, as my kidneys were in a very bad way, This almost broke me dowm, a...

HOW TO DEAL WITH THE UNEMPLOYED. (Recently a member of the Victorian Parliament.) [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 30 June 1899

HOW T) DiEAL WITH TE T s Br J. W. FOSTER ROGERS. (Recently a member of the Victorian Parliament.) --- OHSPTE.P I:.-A Seven Yeairs' Sleep. On ihe evening of Wednesday, 19th April, 1889, the writer of these sug gestions for dealing with the workless men, women and youths of Victoria, attended, as a listener, at a meeting in the Melbourne Atheneum, which was convened, to discuss the unemployed difliculty. This difficulty has aiinually raised its unattractive heaid; like an alligator in. the Orinoco, to snap up the bodies of men, women, and children whom, the current of adviersity has driven into its capacious jaws This repulsive apparition of destitution personified has presented itself' with sickening 'regularity year' after year since the occurrence of the Victorian debacle. .During those seven lean years no serious attempt has been made I by Parliament, or Press, or any of our political guides, to grapple with the important'question of liow to divect the rannual overflow from the' g...

FOOTBALL. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 30 June 1899

FOOTBALL. The newly-organised iealesville and; Tr Coranderrk club played the first match Or of the season against Lilydale oh, lai Saturday last on the ground of the BE latter. The team left Healesville tw shortly after one o'clock, with 19 a players, and Laing and Sykes were so met at Lilydale. The day was alto- W gether unsuitable for football, a steady tir rain falling as the teams lined out on lai to the field, which made the ground pe and ball altogether unplayablel and re completely spoilt whatever chance the as visitors had. Neither club was repre sented by its full strength, Healesville, SI perhaps being the greatest sufferers, as their most notable absentees were Burnside, Hunter, Tough, Cummings, di and Thompson, who for various reasons were unable to play, M'Dougall cap- s tained the visitors, and Jack Morton did likewise for the home team. The play needs little description, as the game was no test whatever of the strength of the two teams. Lilydale at kicked one behind i...

FROM "PUNCH." [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 30 June 1899

The ARGcUS has discovered Ambrose Bierce, the Californian1 journalist and author, whose book of stories, ' In the Midst of Life,' has been a joy to, dis criminatingg readers for years, and the AnGus dubbs him 'The American Kipling.' This sort of thing is simply sickening. Kipling himself had almost to be. forced upon papers like the Anaus-they approve of him when. the world has gone wild about his stories, and now no man with a touch of virility who comes under the notice of the alleged critics escapes the cheap label of ignorance and prejudice. Am brose Bierce is a white-headed man, who has been writing his alleged Kiplingese for thirty years or more. He is probably one of the men whose work helped to make Kipling. The despatching of youthful musical geniuses to the Old World does not find favour with the poetic Marshall Hall, who wants to know what he was specially imported for, and cannot for the life of him understand why the Conservatoire should be passed over so lightly. Up to...

CYCLING NOTES. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 7 July 1899

CYCLING NOTES. We note that an enterprising Aus tralian cycle agent has nominated a horse for the Melboure Cup uilder the name of the cycle he handles. The nominator has brought the wrath of the sporting scribes down on his track, several going so far as to suggest that the V.R.C. refuse in the future to ac cept such nominations purely for ad- a vertising purposes. In this particular instance, " Triumph Cycle" is brdly I likely to achieve such a ruccess as the o good horse " Dunlop " proved himself d by carrying off the Cup in 18ý7. The three most successful riders on h the recent W.A. circuit were W. C. Jackson £89, R. W. Lewis £55, and s F. S. Beauchamup £51. Walne won o the grand total of £2 9s. 6d. We be- 1 lieve that the Westral Champions Coin I pany just about cleared themselves over the series of meetings held at Perth, Boulder, and Coolgardie, and c consideriug the heavy expenses and bonuses paid to the Eostern cracks we think that the company were fortunate in coming out on...

STOCKMAN'S REWARD, YARRA TRACK. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 7 July 1899

STOCKLANi'S REWARD, YARRA TRACK. Mr. Ford, of the Stockman's Reward, Big River, was in the Point recently, and gives most satisfactory intelligence as to mining matters both in regard to the undertaking over which he presides and the surrounding district generally. The parent company, in which he holds largely, controls leases comprising three miles of the line of reef; the tribute syndicate have yet some months of their term to run. At present they employ about 40 hands, and, at a depth of about 130 feet are following the shoot south in a compact body between well- defined walls, averaging from 10 to 15 inches in width, and yielding from 1 oz. to. 1- oz per . ton. - So far this shoot has been proved; unbroken, for.a distance of 390.feet-a record for the district at least; ' North *a ',roll over' disturbs the country, and stone is of lower grade, but 3 ft. in width. Their crushing power is a Grimrod and. .Carter 3-head battery, driven by a Pel ton wheel, with which they..treat about...

THE GRAND NATIONAL. FORECASTING THE WINNERS. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 7 July 1899

THE GRAND NATIONAL. FORECASTING THE WINNERS. By a Sporting Contributor. Nowhere is it more fully recognised than in Australia that No game was ever worth a rap For a rational man to play, Into which no accident, no mishap Could possibly find its way. And it is this spirit displayed by the representatives of our military forces, who have performed' in the tourna ments at Aldershot and Dublin, which has caused Australia to bt recognised as a power in the politics of the world And this is the spirit that every July centres the eyes of all wide Australia. upon Flemington and its hurdles and fences. Yery green and bright looks the sward of the racecourse by the Saltwater river at this season of the 1 year, and if the going is a bit heavy the turf is softer to fall on, and this 4 year promises to bring together as fine fields of horses, both over the hurdles and fences and on the flat, as have I been seen for years past. Tasmania,. New South Wales and South. Austra. lia will all battle ga...

TOOLANGI. July 4. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 7 July 1899

TOOLA.NGI. PFRO OUR CORRESPONDENT. July 4.`; A. meeting of the Yea River Rail way' League will be held at Toolarigi lHoise bn the 15th inst;, when some important business is to be discussed. :Great dissatisfaction is freely ex pressed here at a gang of the unem ployed being sent from Melbourne to cut the mining track from Toolangi to Buxton. There is no doubt but that the 'work, had it been tendered for, would have been done for much less than it will now cost, and many of the local residents would have been only tdo glad to have undertaken the work. However, it seems true, as one man puts it, that it is necessary to join the ranks of the unemployed in Melbourne to stand a show to get some ofe the Go vernment work provided for those out of work. Everything is at a stand-still owiig to the wretched weather we are ex periencing, rain, fog, and snow being continually with us. The rainfall for last month was 7.45 inches, while for the past six months it amounts to 31.45 inches. Several ...
