PANAMA CANAL [Newspaper Article] — Nhill Free Press — 6 March 1914

PANAMA CANAL Without pomp or inaugural cere mony, and unknown to anybody ex cept those persons directly concerned, the Panama Canal lias been navi gated from the Atlantic to the Paci fic" foivthe first time by a steamer under its own power isays the New York correspondent of the "Daily Telegraph" on January 9).-The vessel thus honored is the old French ship {Alexandre Lavalley, built in 1884. She is a steamer of 1200 tons, has a single screw and funnel, and is equipped with three big cranes. The Alexandre Lavalley started her trip from the Atlantic entrance early in December, and, after making various stops on the way, to help to clear away small landslides, pro ceeded through the Pedro Miguel and . Miraflores locks to the Pacific, thus making the first trans-isthmian voyage. Although Hay had been set as the month for the oflicial opening of the canal, it is not believed here that the waterway will be available for general commercial use by ships of large draught until several month...

WINIAM NEWS. [Newspaper Article] — Nhill Free Press — 6 March 1914

WINIAM NEWS. Oar correspondent writeB Har vest Thanksgiving services were held on the 22nd February, and being favored with fine weather, there was a good attendance. Visitors were present from ail parts of the dis trict. The church was tastefully de corated, the flowers and fruits dis played bearing evidence that nature has again showered her gifts upon the district with a lavish hand. The afternoon service was conducted by Mr Geo. Bolwell, of Lorquon, whose fine address was suited to the occasion and was listened to with great in- i terest. Ho exhorted his hearers to : give less thought to the affairs of life, and trust in God of whose good ness we always had so much evi dence, The evening service was con ducted by Mr A. Kossatz, who de livered a very stirring and earnest address. The offerings, which were good at both services, will be devoted to the purchase of a new organ, which is badly needed.

NEW MOTOR PLOUGH. [Newspaper Article] — Nhill Free Press — 6 March 1914

NEW MOTOR PLOUGH. The first British made machine of this type, the "North British Agricul turist," reports, is by M"ssrs Wylrs Brothers, of Evesham. This new im plement is 8 horse-po«ver, and takes one or two furrows at a time while a large digger breast can be attached if required. The difficulty of steering the machine while both wheels are mounted on a common axle has been overcome, and as now built it auto matically cuts a straight furrow. At the end of the furrow it can b? easily and quickly swung round ready to cut a fresh furrow by a devise for driving the outer wheel independently of the inner. The single-furrow weighs 6 cwt. At recent trials near Evesham, on ordinary stubble land, the follow ing results were recorded :—Sirgle furrow—Actual working time, 8 hours land ploughed, 1.6 acres ; depth of ploughing, 6 inches ; consumption of benzol, 3? gallons; consumption of benzol per acre, 2 gallons three pints. Double furrow—Actual working time 8 hours ; land ploughed, "2.8 acre...

BACILLI IX CLOTIII5S 1>UST In the latest issue of the Buffalo "Sanitary Bulletin," Dr. F. E. Fronc zak mentions some experiments da vised to show the dangers of clothes' dust. In proportion to length of time over four days the infectiousness dimin ished, though one pig was infected from sputum dust that had been dry ing on the cloth for sixteen days.

EXPRESS TRAIN. [Newspaper Article] — Nhill Free Press — 6 March 1914

EXPRESS TRAIN. At present an early express runs between Melbourne and Dimboola and back. No one compelled to travel by it is in love with the arrangement, but there it is, and probably it will remain so until t^e commissioners do something more reasonable. There is one matter in connection with the running that might receive attention from the various Traders' Associations and municipal councils through whose territory it runs. CJnder pre sent arrangements it runs from Dim boola as far as Bnllarat on Sunday mornings, and passengers have to cool their heels in that city until the Adelaide express reaches there, when they can continue their journey. As the department most graciously con cedes to its Wiramera patrons the privilege of journeying by the Ade laide express on Sunday morning it seems that the running of the Dim boola express is superflous, and that a more suitable arrangement, and one that would be much more appreciated, would be to bold tho Dimboola ex press back and allow...
