How Not to do it.—A Hibernian Soliloquy. [Newspaper Article] — The Telegraph and Shoalhaven Advertiser — 2 October 1879

How Not to do It.— A Hibernian Soliloquy.     This is the subject of an amusing and mirth- provoking cartoon in last Saturday's number of Sydney Punch, illustrating the "camping-out"     parties, of the Victorian police in search of the   notorious outlaws. The sketch shows two mem- bers of the force snugly "coiled" up in their hammocks à la Ashantee "doing their weed   and lemonade and brandy," while the Kellys are with thumb to nose, "jibing" at the occu- pants of the hammock and their tracker. The skit is dedicated to the Victorian police and the Kelly Gang, and has the following in reference thereto :–   Dear Punch, —As I was trying yesterday to get through a lot of nothing I had to do, my new "Gossoon, " Tim, showed me, with a most   expressive grin, the following characteristic remarks, in a letter from a shipmate of his at Euroa, which place, as you know, is in the   heart ...

Dr. Carver. [Newspaper Article] — The Telegraph and Shoalhaven Advertiser — 9 October 1879

Dr. Carver. ' Dr. Carver's exhibition of skill as a rifleman possesses of course a higher intorost than any aimless display of animal sagacity. Just at present, especially when tho Wimbledon com petition is at its height, anl tho scores mado are quito beyond all precedent, it is well for our crack shots to bo reminded that 'thoy didn't know ov'ry thing down to' Wimbledon, that there are heights attainable in rifle practice which as yot thoy havo not ovon contemplated. What Dr. Carver can do. at long ranges we may conjocturo, but do not know ; his practice at tliirty-fivo or forty yards is simply amazing, both for rapidity and accuracy. His usual mark is a glass ball, filled with cotton wool that tho dispersion of its contents may bo visible. Thoso are thrown up for him at intervals of a second, and, very rarely missod, though ho fires fifteen eonsocutivo shots in a quartor .of a minute. The International Exhibition. j f From the Bathurst Free Press J III. ' What wonders can bo accomplished in a few days?' This is tho oxclamation drawn from visitors who saw tho Exhibition whon it first opened, and who did not nialco a second visit until a week had passed. Tho process of un packing and placing exhibits continued during that timo in tho various courts with a vigour and onorgy and ellect most surprising, livery succeeding day witnessed a transformation scono of a character at onco marvellous and porma mcnt, and if tho work doos not soon rocoiyo tlio fiiuishing touch, tho walls of tho Palaoo will thomsolves have to givo way to mako room for its continuanco.
