MANSFIELD. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 13 May 1870

S ' ANSFIE LD. Fenou " THE INDEPENDENT. T'oo much praise cannot be niccorded to Con stables Baird and Costigan for their plucky con. 'duct in the face of an excited mob such as col looted on the night of Tuesday last for: the pur pose of breaking into the Exchange Hotel after the'doors had been closed at the proper hours. lHaving arrested a prisoner with some difficulty, they stuck to him for some 15 minutes until as. sistance came from the police quarters. Constable Beard was knocked down and brutally kickdd, and had it not been that constable Costigan not only had a set of handcuffs with him, but also used them as " knuckle dusters," the certainty is that Constable Baird would have been dangerously injured, and the probability is that both con stables would'have been killed. In the city-of Melbourne or even Geelong a constable who is lucky enough to stop a runaway horse, or got a Ohinamsn convicted of stealing a rooster, is rewarded by a pecuniary recompense. In the face of this i...

Sir James ItCulloch desired to make a brief state. n0 ment with reference to the course whichi the Government :e intended to take. lion. members would agree with him Cr that the session omust necessarily be a short one. MELBOURNE. May 11. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 13 May 1870

MELBOURlNE. (rnat oneo own connsoreewsmr.) May 11.. The successful tender or tendors for the North-eastorn Railway as fir as Boymour have not yet been determined by the Government, but it is understood that until Mr.I Donovan completes all his arrangements and deposits his percentagoeof £5,000, nothing will be done. It is to be hoped that the time is duly speooified when such arrangement is.to be completed. Rumours -aro afloat that the tenderers who were lowest for sections A, B, and D, will oveon pay in this amount, as it is said that they paid the preliminary deposit of £300'for Mr., Don .ovan. If this is done, it will certainly place the 'Government' on the horns of a' dilemma, as the price named for seootion C is some £40,000 below the next tender, and there is every probability that. if: fresh tendors are called for this part of the line, that they will range.prQtty near.to £120,000;., N1ow,.this will inako the: total amount very: much iin advance of Messrs.:Leggatt and Noonan~...

Thursday, May, 12. (Before Mesers Sharpe and Heath.) William Byrnes pleaded guilty to using ob-   scene language on the previous night, and was fined, 5s or 24 hours' imprisonment. Edward Kelly was brought up on remand, and   charged with robbery in company at Kilfera on   the 16th March.   Mr Superintendent Nicolas prosecuted, and Mr M'Donnell appeared for the prisoner. Mr Nicolas said that prisoner could not be   identified as having taken part in that robbery,   and he was discharged.   A second charge was then preferred against him for robbery under arms near Seymour on the 20th April. Mr Nicolas said the police had made every exertion to find the principal witness against pri- soner in this case, but he could not be discovered. Without his evidence it was hopeless to proceed against prisoner, and he was consequently dis- charged.     Kelly was then charged with r...
