A run of dry weather would make a won derful difference in the returns for the season. Last week we had a very heavy hail storm, at one placo they were so largo as to stun two horses and kill rabbits and fowls. Agricultural Societies. ?ftF.- ADJUSTING THE SUBSIDY. A few months ago the Minister for Agriculture appointed a board to inquire into the working of the agricultuial societies and the Government expendi ture in eounection 'with them. The board reported that there were too mail}' societies, aud that they had not done the educational work that might have been expected. It was recommended that the Govern ment subsidy should be abolished, and - that in future money prizes should be given, to selected societies to encourage stock, agricultural, and horticultural ex hibits. _ i Mr. Fegan, while concurring in the view that the work accomplished by agri cultural societies has been disappointing, d^SS not feel j ustified in adopting such drastic changes as advocated by the board. He hopes, however, to obtain the necessary reforms by more gradual steps. Most of the societies have incur red heavy liabilities, and they would, he thinks, be placed in a critical position if Government aid were su...

Australian Produce in England. [Newspaper Article] — The Canowindra Star — 5 October 1900

Australian Produce In England. The poultry market just now in Em gland is in a very depressed condition, and the prices at which fowls are selling are ridiculously low. The other day in Sniithfield Market 150 good English fowls, weighing on an average 3U-. each, sold at Is 6d each, and at the same salesman's place three crates of Queens land poultry which had been on offer for three days, but could not find a purchaser, only Is Isd having been bid for them. Nor is the matter any better at Leaden hall Market. A well-kuown salesman there had a consignment of fowls and ducks from Now South Wales, and last j week lie could make only Is 6d each of - the bivds, whicb were a fortnight since worth half-a-crown. The ducks he could not sell at all, and they are still in the cold chamber -waiting' for a buyer, 'It is not to be wondered at that ducks are j unsaleable at tbis time of the year, but. for fuwlsit is most uncommon to find prices so low. Of course, August and September are always mon...
