Our English Letter. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 14 July 1877

Our English letter. . [The following was held over from our last issue.] - - lt Each in his hidden sphere we move apart.' While most of us . laymen are just now thinking only of Turkey and Russia, peace or war, the clerics are absorbed in the nnmincr iiidfment in the 'Ridsdale Ritual case. To them, facing east vei'SHS facing south is a matter of infinitely greater importance than Sclave versus Turk, and vestments and wafer bread are far beyond the freedom of the Danube or the possession of Constanti nople. The judgment, it is expected, will be a compromise. The death of Mr. B. Shaw has deprived the Ritualists of one of their ablest opponents. Mr. -Randall, of All Saints, Clifton, whose ritual is about the most extravagant in '(England, is about to be prosecuted; The High Church papers are angry because several of the Broad Church clergy remembered to forget the Athanasian Creed on Easter Day. Poor. J udas Iscariot came in for his annual whipping on Good Friday He was - duly ? castig...

(To the Editor of the Grenfell Record.) Sir, — It is quite time a woman had hor say about the little storm in the cup which has been raging so long, and about which nothing else is talked of. It is certain that the late hours kept by the Improvement Committee will not improve the health of its motnbers, and wo shall oro long be hearing of an increase of lunacy, caused by pressure of road upon some of their brains. I suppose neither party can shut up either of- tho disputed roads, then why should so much timo and angry talk bo wasted 1 To settle the matter, I beg to propose that each party should start a Road-mending Boo, and in a practical way, with coats off, and pick and sliovol, try and effect with tho hand what will never be dono by tho tongue. By this plan, tho party who malto tho best road, will obtain tho moat praise, and tlio1 public who use tho road will eventually decide which of the two is the most desirable approach into tho town. This will obviate any more late hours, a...

It will be seen by an advertisement in another, column, that Grenfell is about taking steps to follow the example of Murrumburrah, Wagga, Young, Yass, and oilier places, in forming an association for protecting the interests of free selectors, ana emancipating tneni irom tne haidships they suffer through the defects of the Land Acts. As the country is on the verge of a general election, the present time is most opportune for forming such a combination. The . selectors are sufficiently numerous in 3 majority of the electoral districts to place their caildi dates at the head of the poll, and. advantage should be taken of the interval preceding tho coming contest for securing suitable men, those who will truly and faithfully advocate their ; opinions in the Assembly. Union is strength, ard in order that the various associations may become a power in the land, it is desirable that they concentrate their strength, which can best be effected by the formation of a general league, whose fir...
