How it is. [Newspaper Article] — Bombala Times and Manaro and Coast Districts General Advertiser — 21 July 1899

? How it is In the streets of the town where I live I sometimes meet a poor fellow who is so badly off that his appeal for a penny or two is hardly to be resisted. He has lost both his legs above therknees and punts himself along tho pavement with his hands, like a loaded barge in shallow water. Thank Mercy, one doesn't .often see human hulks like him. ?Where there i° a single instance of a man having lost both legs or both arms there are a dozen where only one limb of the pair , is missing. And where thero is a single oase of the latter sort there are a hundred cuses of people who aro lame, or more or loss disabled, by disease or minor injuries which aro scarce ly noticeable, yet in the long run very serious to those so afflicted. Consequently, when we sum up both classes wo perceive that it isn't tho total wrecks and the incurables that are most ex pensive to society, bat the prodigious host which must work, and does work, yet always under difficulties and against hindrances. Men ...

A Terrific Storm. [Newspaper Article] — Bombala Times and Manaro and Coast Districts General Advertiser — 21 July 1899

A Terrific Storm june 12 was a terrible night for New Richmond, the beautiful little village being almost wiped out of ex istence by one of the most severe cy clones that ever visited the locality. It carried ruin and death in its path, the killed and injured being numbered at between 230 and 300. News of the disaster was brought by a travelling man from Portage, Wis,, who was stopping at the Nicollet House in Now Richmond when the cyclone struck tho town. He saw the funnel-shaped cloud as it came up che principal street and he took refuge in, the basement of the hotel, which .. was completely wrecked, together with every other business house in the city. In the terrible sheets of rain following the cyclone Mr. Carroll and his comrades succeeded in rescuing the proprietor, his wife, and one child from the debris and they also removed a laundry girl, who' was so seriously injured' it is not thought she could possibly live. They also removed two men, who were very seriously injured. M...

A Mountain of Solid Granite. [Newspaper Article] — Bombala Times and Manaro and Coast Districts General Advertiser — 21 July 1899

' A Mountain of Solid - - Granite* In Burnet County, Texas, rising abruptly out of tho level prairie, is a mountain of solid granite as smooth and bald as a negro's head without hair. It covers an area of seventy live acres and rises two hundred feet nbovo the surrounding surface. It. contains, above the level of the base, I one hundred million cubic feet of granite, available to the quarryinan without a foot of dirt or other matter to be i- tripped off. The value of gran ite at tho quarry in Eastern States is twenty-five cents per cubic foot. The granite in this mc untain, at the nom inal value of one cent per cubic foot, would be a million dollars for the amount of stone above the level of its base. The size of the stone which may be here quarried and moved is limited only by the capacity of mach inery for removing them. Tests made 'by Col. D. W. Flager, of the United Stntes Army, at the Arsenal, Bock Island, ill., and certified by him to tha Texas capital commissioners, show the ...

Poddy's Hut Reserve. [Newspaper Article] — Bombala Times and Manaro and Coast Districts General Advertiser — 21 July 1899

Poddy's Hut Reserve In September lust the Local Land Board held an exhaustive enquiry into the proposal made by the Trustees of the Bibbenluke Estate to effect an ex change for Water Reserve No. 47, better known as the Poddy's Hut lie serve. The preponderance of evidence at that enquiry certainly wont to shew ? that the land proposed to be exchanged was inferior in eve-ry way to tho lle serve. The district surveyor, Mr. Halliday, valued the land at 82/6 all lound, and Mb. Coolson Mudphy, who acted as valuer for the Land Tax, set the valuation at 60/- per acre for the water reserve, and 32/6 for the surren der land. These are valuations of unprejudiced witnesses. ? Notwith standing ibis the Board valued the surrender land at 36/- per ucre, and the reserve «t So/-, and recommended that the exchange be eifected if the Trustees of ihe Estate would buy up all tho scattered blocks of Crown Land surrounded by the liibbenluke Eatute. j.ue oojbui oi me exenange, a iia MB. The New Session. [Newspaper Article] — Bombala Times and Manaro and Coast Districts General Advertiser — 21 July 1899

The New Session The Governor's Speech at the opening of Parliament, ? although prolific enough in good intentions as suoh documents, usually are, is lacking in one important item. While referring generally to the satisfactory position of the cause of union, and affirming that there is no reason f'r delay aftor the Bill has been accepted by two other colonies, nothing is said about the intention of the Government with regard to getting our House in order for the coming change. It is expected that within twelve months from now the first elections for the Federal Par liament will be upon us, and in. the meantime there are several important arrangements to bemado for the sat isfactory conducting of that campaign. Arrangements should be made immed iately for taking a census of the pop ulation, as uutil we know the exact number of people in tho c 'lony we are unable to calculate the number of representatives to y.^ioji wo shall be entitled. 'Mere bfficialostiinhtes will not suffice, becau...
