Last year we dug up over a mil lion, pounds worth of gold in New South Wales, coined it into sove reigns and sent the mane}' to Europe or America to square the contra in favor of those countries for goods purchased and which could have boon made here. The daily papers, say it is a good thing to send the money out of the coun try, for it's a bad sign when we ex port more than we import and have stacks of gold in consequence. N.S.W. isn't troubled much with the gold nuisance just now. « * V. * One day at the latter end of last week a party of three shooters bagged 20 rabbits along the river bank near Russell's. The soft nature of the alluvial flats offers admirable facilities for burrowing and breeding, and in that locality the rabbits are said to be increasing rapidly. When the pest gets fairly going in the soft country in Crown Lands, it wil...

Now, the Budget has no time for the apologist for the liquor habit who tries to prove that Australians are the most abstemious people in the world— that they are not quite so uao. as sumo uiuer peupie. j-i bibulpusness be a dangerous do mestic and national habit (and none can deny that it is) then it should be attacked by all the forces at the command of the legislature, „ while every private body or individ...

The committee carried out its du ties and selected a site with a promptness that is an object lesson to the Federal Government in its Federal Capital Site1 diliieulty. Nearly every Pastures Protection Board in the State has voted a sub stantial .sun) towards the expense to be incurred in importing Dr. Danysz and his deadly microbes. And landowners are hopeful that if the Doctor is not pounced upon as an 'undesirable immigrant' or quarantined for an indefinite period that the great rabbit des truction r-roblem will be solved. M Pressing Need For : . Protection, Mir. CAiutUTiiuiis, as Slate Trea surer, informed the people , that during the year just gone this country produced wealth valued at over ;£-! 5,000,000. This, ho 'doubt, is a ingliiy saiisiactory -rcsmc -irnu is brought about principally by the. splendid wool clip, wheat yield, agricultural and dairy output, and tho value of the minerals won from Broken Hill and the gold mines of the State. IRRIGATION. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 13 January 1906

IRRIGATION. I.v view of the alarming reourroncy of the drought periods the question of irrigation has lately received more serious consideration from tho people and tho legislature than hitherto. The hard lessons of ex perience have the most lasting and salutary effect. And there is no reason why Australia should not be a great field for irrigation, for it lias some magnificent freshwater streams,' which,- in addition to a system of ' water conservation ?should provide sufiicient water to irrigate when required, much of our low-lying rich chocolate soils which invariably lic_ alongside our great rivers. And we are not with out proofs of the practicabloness and efficacy of the system. At Mil dura, on tho Murray, U000 acres are under irrigation, and support ?1000 people. The average clour profit' is £30 an acre. And what has boon done at Mildura caji bo equally well done in hundreds of other areas in this and other States/ In our own district at Kameruka a modest system of ir rigation...
