Perth Letter. The marriage of the Rev. D. I. Freedman,B .A, with Miss F. Cohen, of London, was celebrated at the Perth synagogue on the 22nd. At 3 p.m., the time appointed for the wedding, the building was crowded with spectators, and presented a scene of unusual brilliancy. SOCIAL AND GENERAL. Presentation. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 7 January 1898

SOCIAL AND GENERAL. Presentation. Mr. Steve Jacobs, an old employee of S. Weingott and Sons' Waterproof and Clothing Factory, who left for England on New Year's Eve, was the recipient of a handsome present just prior to his departure, given to him by the firm and employees. Mr. S. Weingott, who made the presentation, spoke in high terms of Mr. Jacob's valuable services and wished him every success in his future career. Mr. Jacobs suitably responded, and said it afforded him much pleasure in being able to speak highly of his employers. He thanked them one and all for the kind memento they had given him, and would never forget the pleasant times he had spent with his fellow workmen. The beriss of Wrilliam the infant son of Mrs* William Sherman, was celebrated at the residence, 711 U-eorge street, on bunday Jan. 2nd, 1898. The guests were only the direct members of the family. Dr. A. A. Cohen performed the operation in a practically skilful manner, and received the encomiums of the exp...

What an enormous amount of contradiction surrounds the truths with which we satisfy ?ourselves. Each prayer we utter asks fora speedy return to the Holy Land, and on each occasion of devotion we turn our faces to the East as a token that we have not forgotten the holiness of that promise which is , yet to be fulfilled, so we call upon God to renew His mercies to us, to remember the faith of the Patriarchs, to renew unto, us a land which has passed from us, and there to establish us once more as a kingdom among the nations. As we listen to some of the preachers we cannot reconcile with this their finding that the accomplishment of the design of the Zionist Conference would be an absurd and ridiculous undertaking. Their sentiments find echo throughout the community, but as -we cannot hope for perfection in any human plan we should take the- will for the deed and ' leave God to manage for us, and to grant what His unerring wisdom sees we want.' This projected return to the Holy Land ex...

The channel into which the inaugural meeting of the Chevra Keddisha drifted, has very rightly been much questioned by our corres pondent ' A Jew ' On the one hand we have Mr. Nahum Rapken acting the good part of setting an example and putting the matter of finance at rest, and on the other a stranger to the promoters, as if prompted by interes ed parties, taking the matters vitally of importance to the success of the Chevra right out of their hands, and endeavouring to even usurp tneir right to a seat on the Executive. It is a great pity that such untoward conduct need be noted, especially as the object and aim of the Society is peace and its ministering offices, by seeking out the victims of grief and pain, and attending to their solace ; or when illness has laid low a member of our faith, help may be administered in the true spirit and in the names of the Jewish brotherhood. For ages this work has kept the chosen people before the world as the Sons of Pity. We may hope now that th...

PAW PAW FRUIT. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 14 January 1898

PAW PAW FRUIT. This fruit is becoming increasingly popular in the Australian colonies. The green pears of the tree and the juice of the unripe fruit have been used for many years in the Indies and Africa for making meat tender, while in tropical America, Papain is largely extracted from the juice of the green fruit for medical use in the highly successful treatment of dyspepsia. But in no now being done by a Cairns (Njrth Queensland) firm, who are growing immense quantities of the Paw Paws for the purpose of manufacturing a table sauce which is quite unique in the piquancy of its flavour, besides being a most valuable digestive condiment, containing as it does a large proportion of Papain, the most active digestive ferment known to medical science. The Paw Paw^ Sauce has been introduced into all the colonies, and is gaining much favour. Mrs. Bornstein deserves the special thanks of the promoters of the Chevra Keddisha in coming forward as she expresses ' ready at any time, night or ...

Vanity and Affectation. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 14 January 1898

Vanity and Affectation. There are few defects which appear easier than vanity. Children delight in being noticed and admired, and it is therefore of- importance that amidst all our affectionate attentions to them, all our effoits for their -good and happiness, we guard against nurturing their self-love, self-importance, and fondness for admiration. Children ought to be the objects of our assiduous atten tion — we should be willing to give up our time not only for the serious work of education, but to please, to amuse, and to make them haot»v. This, however, mav be done without throwing back their attention on them selves. We may show them every kindness without flattering their vanity ; but here many people are apt to mistake, their notice is bestowed in so injudicious a manner. If, for instance, upon the entrar ce of children into a room/ a general whisper of approbation go round the circle ; if remarks are made on their persons, their carriage, and their manner ; if their sayings ...

CRITERION THEATRE. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 14 January 1898

CRITBEION THEATKE. 'Charley's Aunt' has been amongst the greatest successes of the festive season, and it has returned for the third time, which judging from the reception there need be no hurry to remove. Mr. Frank Thornton plays the name part with his wonted whimsicality, the secondary parts are embodies with care and intelligence, arid the general business of this laughable piece goes with as much briskness as of old. The Supreme Court of Persia has lately decided that the clause in the charter of German Freemasons which grants them the right to exclude Jews, is illegal. Official statistics from Vienna, Austria, show that four hundred and ten persons renounced Judaism in that city during the past year, This large number is something to ponder upon, but it is also announced that seventy two persons in Yienna embraced Judaism within one year. There is nothing lost by the loss of the above four hundred deserters, and we are convinced that the seventy-two persons who, out of convicti...

Czar Nicholas has given orders for the draf ting of a decree providing for the introduction of compulsory education, free of cost, for all classes of the population. This move on hia part is encountering an immense amount of opposition, especially in government circles where it is argued that ' the principal source and cause of nihilism is the over -education ol the lower classes of the population , for whom no occupation in keeping with their intellectual attainments can be provided or found and who are therefore so dissatisfied with their lot that their discontent takes the form of anarchy and ! nihilism.'
