THRIFT IS THE ARTIFICIER OF FORTUNE Thrift is just saving, not alone by the accumulation of money, but by the wise spending of it, and saving is just commonsense. The majority of incomes are modest, so the majority of people must plan, either for unusually heavy purchases, or for the eventual establishment of a 'competence. The majority of people obviously realise this, and use the best, most practical system of all, the Savings Bank account. It costs nothing, holds your money safe while paying interest, and 're leases it to you whenever and wherever you may require it. Yan Yean RED CROSS BRANCH [Newspaper Article] — Eltham and Whittlesea Shires Advertiser — 10 May 1940

Yan Yean RED CROSS BRANCH The meeting of Yan Yean branch of the Red Cross was attended by an enthusiastic gathering last week. A letter was received from head quarters acknowledging a parcel of goods containing 15.prs of sox, nine scarves, one pair of knee caps. Resi dents have responded very, well to the house-to-house appeal made by four collectors of the branch, and it has been decided to forward 15/ each month to the Red Cross appeal The next meeting will be held on May 28. THROWING STONES AT CARS Apparently having nothing better to do, last. Sunday afternoon, a party of youths and young women occupied their time throwing road metal at passing cars. Several missiles took effect ons the vehicles, although fortunately no one was injured. It is a pity that these 'people, who were old enough to have more sense, could not direct their energies to a constructive, rathser than a dangerous and des trictive objective.

Correspondence To the Editor) [Newspaper Article] — Eltham and Whittlesea Shires Advertiser — 10 May 1940

Correspondence *--'-~-- -- To the Editor) Sir,---I was amused when I read in the "Advertiser" of the 26/4/40 that' Mr. Porter and Mr..Keenan with Cr. McLollan's help, are going to make Wattle Glen improve. In conversa tions with' others I have been inform ed on good authority that-Cr. Clarke is building two or three more !resi dences very shortly. At the present !hel has three ;homes let, the last one completed recently .is now occupied by the Rev. S; Cragg. Cr. Clarke is evidently improving Wattle Glen without the trio's help Sor interference and; I. also lh ve bleen told that he has serious intentions of building an up-to-date general store, which I consider a great movi, for.the district. In my opinion the-e sa n. 'great opening for a,:general birsiness in Wattle Glen with a good nutn in chare' and capable of handlinrl ant managing a business.-Yoors &c., * * ,; - ,' :' * OBSEln\ lrR.
