THE RIFLE THE BAT, AND THE HORSE. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 28 December 1865

THE RIFLE, THE BAT, AND TI HORSE. ------ We take the following from "The Au tralasian" of the 23rd inst.: New Soith Wales v. Victoria! "Is , t treble event to come off?" begins to - asked in sporting. circles. Both colone have thoroughly.warmed up to the inte, of each occasion of their friendly rivair We sent our riflemen to be honorably an worthily beaten in Sydney, and it is feare 'the New South Wales cricketers will b. us on our own ground; yet if our ina oi bat, ball, and stumps, only made as good fight for the honor of th's colony as our re. presentatives in the rifle match, we shall b highly gratified with the contest, enable ou batsmen to score a victory in the second a the three events. These intercolonial tour. naments of skill and prowess do an imuen~ amount of good by keeping up vigorous toni of thought in our young manhood; and pr? bably there is no one idea that so readil and practically binds us in feeling toward onr fellow-subjects in the old country, as thi spirit sh...

THE FENIAN MOVEMENT. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 28 December 1865

TIHE FEXIAN MOVEM3ENT. M.i~r of our readers are doubtless looking aniiously for some news relative to the Fe nian orgLnization, in America and at home -indeed we may say all over the world and doubtless a number of them think that the hope:; that were nce nc ttertained are now finally blighctd, because the arrest of a few people bupposed to be in some way conlect?:i with thei movement h:s taken pL,:ce. Look at in any point of view, and we canot see how such can roe:ly be the ca ,. If the arrest of a hundred or so of unfortun'ates supposed now to be in no. way connccted with the Fenian movement, so far i ,, rost of them a2 concerned, and these : .: of no :taiding whatever, is to camp the hopes of the party, then wLh we would ask need the affair ever create surprise in Eng. land, or for a moment occupy the public mind ? MISCELLANEOUS EXTRACTS. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 28 December 1865

MIISCELLANEO UJS EXTRACTS. BiD NEWS FOR LCFE MICE.--A gentleman in Scotland has trained a couple of mice and invented machinery for enabling them to spin cotton yarn. The work is done on the tread-mill principle. It is so constructed the common house mouse is' able to make atonement to society for past offences by twisting and reeling from 100 to 120 threads per day. To complete this the little pedes trian has to run 10- miles. This journey it performs evcry day with ease. A halfpenny's worth of oatmeal at is 3d per peck serves these treadmill culprits for the long period of five weeks. In that time it makes 110 threads per day, being an average of 3,850 threads of 25in., which is nearly nine lengths of the reel. A penny is paid to women for every cut in the ordinary way. -At this rate a mouse earns 9d every five weeks, which is one farthing per day or 7s Gd. per .annum. Take Gd off for board an las for machinery, there will arise Os clear profit from- every mouse yearly. The mouse ...

NEW ZEALAND. THE GOLDFIELDS. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 28 December 1865

NEW ZEALAND. THE GOLDFIEILDS. The largest quantity of gold ever brought to C i elson by one steamer, 14,760oz., had been c received by the Wailaby from the Grey, but t the t:.e is not stated during which this had I bten accumulktcd. The information from aol the dig ,uiis was, however, generally r f?voutrable. Okarita, which is to the southwardi of lokitika, had become the dos- 1 tinati;n. of large numbers of dianers, after c some favourable news; and the Bruce was expected to be laid on regularly to convey stores and passecngers thither. Number.i ha t also proceeded north toiwzrd's the Lyell and Buller rivers, and it was probable that the Lioncz- would be engaged to make a survey of Port ]lizabeth, to the north of the Grey, wherea considerablebody of miners are known to be at work. On the beach diggings, in different localities, good results were also I said to be obtained. At liokitika the weather continued very unsettled, but owing to the presence of c;icient tug-boats, there had ...

A LIBERAL SQUATTER. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 4 January 1866

A LIBErAU SQrATTE.-A- case of the most liberal generosity on the part of MIr. Charles Wilson, a wealthy squatter, of Horsham, has just been brought under our notice. It is now pretty welt known that the country in the vicinity of that township has suff.rcd terribly ir?cn the drought, and, in consequence, several articles of food had almost re?:ched f amine prices. To meet the prevailing distress ai?oung:t thlat portion of I the communitv who are unable by labour to rroride sufficient sustenaee, narmely, the widows and orPhans, of whom there is a large number, MIr. Wison, before leaving his residence at Wahcer flr the -sea coast, gave instructions to one of the Lutebhers of the town to frnish for all such hamilies an ample supply of meat, free of charge, during the next three months. This is an action that cannot refleet too much credit on the liberality of the donor, and speaks louder for the sterling charity of the lman in the plain words in which we record the circulustanco, that ...
