A Trip to the Back Country. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Recorder — 29 June 1887

A Trip to the Back Country. (By Meteor.) Having heard numerous glowing accounts of the quantity of grass, and game of various sorts in the so called Back Country, I decided to avail my- self of a few days holiday and visit Hatfield, to ascertain the correctness, or otherwise of the alluring rumors of thousands of turkeys, and any amount of kangaroos &c. abounding there. Ac- cordingly on Sunday, May 29th, at 9.30 a.m., I started with a buggy and pair of ponies, and being abundantly supplied with ammunition both for a fowling piece and a Martini-rifle, which I had armed myself with, together with a moderate supply of Usher, in case of requirement, I anticipated having a good trip and possibly bagging some game. The morning was as bright as could be, and the roads all that one could de- sire. To avoid the sand hills that oc- cur for the direct road to the Common gate, I went via the old race-course, and was much surprised, but much pleased, to witness the amazing growth the gra...

A Dealer in Liquor. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Recorder — 6 July 1887

A Dealer in Uquor. When I was in the North Atlantic Squad ron about fifteen years ago, wo lay alongside the wharf at the Portsmouth Navy-yard for some time. Ono of the wisest little dogs I ever saw lived in tho barracks there. Ho was a-spaniel, of a bluish-steel color, with black curs, a black nose, black feet, and a little black' end to his tail. His ear3 were covered with long Bilkv hair, while a quantity of the snme silken hair hung from his two forelegs. He was a great favorite With all the officers, and peoplo attached to the yard, nnd r. special pet at tho barracks. Ho was brought to tho yard when a wee puppy by a marine officer, who took him from his pocket on hia arrival, nnd no one would have believed him nnythinjf but n little gray fluffy worsted ball. The officer gave him the name of ' Corporal,' and kept him in the house till he was transferred to another station, when he presented him to a brother officer.
