Indignant Meeting at Doncaster. THE COUNCIL CALLED ON TO RESIGN THEIR SEATS. [Newspaper Article] — Reporter — 15 May 1890

Indignant Meeting at Doncaster. THE COUNCIL CALLED ON TO RE- SIGN THEIR SEATS. A well-attended meeting of ratepayers was   held in the Athenæum Hall, Doncaster, on   Saturday evening last to protest against the action of the Council in deciding to build a Shire Hall and offices. It will be remembered that Mr. R. Serpell, an old and respected   resident of Doncaster, offered the Council a valuable block of land in a most central position on which to build a hall, and that several residents also came forward with monetary assistance towards the erection of the same. Altogether about £200 was pro- mised, and the Council at its last meeting agreed to accept these munificent offers and decided to build a hall to cost about £400, which they considered would meet present requirements. A number of ratepayers took exception to the Council building at present, and contended that all the available money   of the shire should be spent on the r...
