DR BICE ON TflE CHURCH KM COUNTRY.* The witty and versatile _Sydney Sm1*h, said that i_^was a bad plan to read a book previous to reviewing it, because by such a course the mind was likely to be prejudiced. We feel that in the present instance it might have been better for us to have'followed the advice,pf the _reviewer. Owing to the reputation of Dr. _RiPE, as a preacher and controversialist—to the prominence with which he has been; before . the public, and to the position rwhieh he, now occupies, it would naturally be supposed that his utterances on the present'state of the Church and country, would be" worthy of the occasion, and of* that great, denomination of loyal Chriptians with which-he is connected, and which has given himsor many marks of esteem and confidence.; " But in this we have been sadly .disappointed. EASTERN SUMMARY BOSTON. There are in Massachusetts thirteen Swedenborgian Societies. The ' largest of these is the Boston Societ y, wMch has five hundred and twenty-five members. The others range from seventy down to twelve. The Boston Society are not all resident members, as we learn, but it includes persons living in Maine, New-Hampshire, and " all over the country." The Boston Society is the _largest in the country, and in the world. 1 The actual average attendance on its stated worship is three hundred and fifty. All the thirteen Societies in Massachusetts have in the aggregate nine hundred and fifty-eight members, averaging sixty-six persons to a Society. In the whole United States we find reported thirty-four Socities, having an aggregate'of one thousand four hundred and ninety-six members, or averaging forty-four members to a Society,1 and we find four other Societies reported whose numbers are not given. It has a weekly organ, whose subscription list does not support...

THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE • We, last week, gave to ; our readers the President's Message entire. It came by telegraph to one of our neighbors, and was set up in haste j and we obtained it so shortly before.going to. press, that we could not give it the proper revision. The inaccuracies, however,, are not such as to greatly obscure the sense. ' , The Message_, may be regarded as an able State paper. It is plain, direct, unadorned, compreh ! ensiv;e. There is no _effort at rhet oric, no boasting, no intemperate denunciation, ho ' egotism'. ' If we should inake any criticism, we would say that there is alack of ardor." It is nbt! sufficiently adapted to the awaking of enthusiasm, in a: cause so great as that' of_^preserying the country's unity, and life, and_^inestimable blessings and of proving to a wondering world the capability of man, under a free religion and with freedom of thought and action, of maintaining good government and a largely extended empire.
