Delta to offer discount web airfare [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 11 February 1999

Delta to offer discount web airfare The Washington Post WASHINGTON _ First came the stick and now the carrot. Just days after abandoning its effort to collect $2 for every round-trip flight that wasn't booked on its Web site, Delta Air Lines Inc. was back at it again, this time offering "Weekly Web Fares" for anyone making their reservations on the company's Internet site. Starting this Wednesday and every Wednesday thereafter, Delta said it will offer "deeply discounted" fares the following weekend to a variety of U.S. destinations if people purchase the tickets on the Delta Web site. Passengers using the Web fares would be able to depart each Saturday and return the following Monday or Tuesday. Customers buying tickets on the Web site will be issued electronic tickets, further reducing the airline's costs. By convincing customers to purchase tickets through the Internet, the airline potentially saves millions of dollars in travel agent commissions and transaction charges o...

Few regulations restrict bounty hunters [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 11 February 1999

Few regulations restrict bounty hunters By Brooke A. Masters, The Washington Post In some ways, the nation's estimated 2,500 to 5,000 "bail recovery agents" have more leeway than do the police. An 1873 Supreme Court decision, Taylor vs. Taintor, ruled that they can enter homes and grab bail jumpers without a warrant because the fugitive, in accepting a bond, has agreed to allow the bondsman to come after him. Only a few states regulate bounty hunters; Florida, for example, has an outright ban on out-of-state bounty hunters. "It is a mounting national problem ... (and) a very dangerous situation," said Sen. Robert G. Torricelli, D-N.J., who became interested in the issue after bounty hunters grabbed an innocent woman in New York and took her to Alahama. When they realized they had the wrong person, they gave her $24 for bus fare home. Last year, Torricelli introduced a bill calling on the Justice Department to issue guidelines for state licensing of bounty hunters. It passed ...

World watches as King Abdullah takes over father's reign [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 11 February 1999

World watches as King Abdullah takes over father's reign By Matthew McAllester, Newsday In May, 1953, three days after he look the reins of power, the idealistic teen-age, British-educated King Hussein introduced a startling new policy of freedom of speech and freedom of the press. The results were disastrous. The young King's enemies used their new liberty to try to bring down the monarchy. Hussein felt compelled to quash his own democratic impulses by introducing an authoritarian government on the first anniversary of his coronation. It was not a good start. And he was to make other mistakes. But Hussein evolved into an agile politician, keeping one eye on his enemies at all limes. Nearly 46 years later, he died one of the most respected rulers in the world, a symbol of stability and wisdom. Now, as his son, King Abdullah, takes over the running of the country, anxious governments in Israel, the United States and around the Arab world are waiting to see if the young king c...

Given a choice each at us would like to haw* their own computer, but the expense of buying one can be out of reach for a college student on a fixed budget. forTwo,orOne?i N__ DinnerforTwo,orOne? By Nicole McGee staff writer By Nicole McGee staff writer ^r February 14th is a holiday. (In case you forgot!) " But unlike most major holidays, a person's feelings towards this day depend on a few things. Most importantlylovc. A valentine in Webster's Dictionary is defined as "a card or gift sent to one's sweetheart on Valentine's Day." Is this to say those of us without a "sweetheart" cannot enjoy the festivities? When questioned about the personal meaning of this exclusive holiday, members of the Behrend community responded with a variety of opinions. Doug Stevens, Tech Service employee at Bruno's, simply claims that, "Valentine's Day means if you forget the one you love, you're in big trouble." Professor Kay Johnson, School of Business, thinks, "It's just a time to stop and remember those we really love; remember what's important in life." Alesia Petro, 08 Psych, says, "It's a day when my finance has to pay attention to me." Nic...

^ EverythingYouEverWantedtoKnowAboutValentine'sDay [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 11 February 1999

^ EverythingYouEverWantedtoKnowAboutValentine'sDay By Michael Coursey Staff Writer For over 1500 years Valentine's Day has been observed by people the world over. It has been a time to celebrate love and passion for couples, and to spread affection among others. Historically, St. Valentine's Day was declared a day of feasting by Pope Gelasius, in Ancient Rome, according to Mani Niall. Mid-February was the traditional time of the Lupercian Festival, in honor of the God of fertility and the sensual pleasure. Pope Gelasius outlawed the Pagan festival, but replaced it with one that was socially more acceptable. St. Valentine had been an Italian bishop, who performed secretive marriages against the wishes of Claudius II. He was eventually arrested, imprisoned and put to death on Febraury 14th in the year 270. He was thus martyred and declared St. Valentine. In 1415, the first Valentine was sent by a French Knight in London, after the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, to his wife i...

Payton faces new challenge [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 11 February 1999

Payton faces new challenge Out Of Bounds JASONSNYDER Former Chicago Bears' legend Walter Payton has a new role to play in life. It doesn't deal with finding a hole in his opponent's defense or leaping over the pile for a score or barreling through his defenders with grace and grit. This time, there is a path in front of Payton that he has never seen before. But it deals with more important things than seven points or a rushing record; it deals with his life. With Payton's announcement last week that he has a rare liver disease, the world began to see the once powerful man in a state of heavy emotion, sadness and fear. Payton didn't mince words, "Am I scared? Hell yeah, I'm scared. Wouldn't you be scared?" But behind the fear and weakened body lies a man that once graced the football field in a way many people never saw before. So instead of looking at this man as a fallen hero, I look at him as a man that has overcome incredible odds before, so why not do it again. Payton'...
