Jiumj Jfan geprtmtHt . NUMBER NINEThe daily and weekly newspaper trade of New York , form * one of the most important branches of business of the Great Metropolis . Ten years ago , newspapers , it might be said , were in their infancy , or at least the business did not embrace one twentieth part of the number engaged in the retail trade , compared to the present . Theu , very few newspaper depots were in existence , the retail sales being chiefly made in the streets by newsboys , some of whom at thc present time , owing to a spirit of industry and economy , are the possessors of a snug little competency , gathered solely from the sales of newspapers through the streets . Chief of these may be mentioned , Mr . Michael Madden , and Mr . Mark Maguire , who though well to do in the world , do not even now slight the trade , but give a helping hand to those whom poverty has marked out as its own , and encourage them when truly deserving , in numerous ways . The lirst wholesale house fort...
