f* A great many otherwise intelligent people will try to make you believe that , because such and such soaps are I M-ported , they are necessarily superior to the American product . But are they ? Why should they be ? Americans make the best locomotives , the best cutlery , the best cottons , the best ships in all the world . Why shouldn t they make the best soap ? SOME CAT-HOLE ANECDOTES . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 23 February 1907

SOME CAT-HOLE ANECDOTES . BY KATHARINE POPE . In the old , old houses they always provided for the cat , by arranging for this valued creature an entrance and exit known as the cat-hole . The cat was thus enabled to wait on itself , no person need bother to rise and open the door for troublesome pussy . And it was indeed surprising the way cats understood about the cat-hole , kittens learning right away . Perhaps the children helped them a little ini getting their lessons , but unquestionably their own luxury-loving desires helped still morj . If it was cold outside , pussy would be pretty apt to make use of the quickest means to the warm inside . Sometimes the cat-hole did not lead directly into the house . In my grandfather s house , built a century or more ago , the cat had to go through quite a passage before he got in , but , ono advantage , he had no bothersome door to lift or open , as was the case with many cats of his acquaintance . He entered through a hole in the clapboar...

THE MAN WITH THE DOLEFUL DUMPS . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 23 February 1907

THE MAN WITH THE DOLEFUL DUMPS . You may talk of the man of honor and fame , You may tell of the man with the ancestral name . You may speak of the man who from wisdoms well pumps , But I mention the man wiih the doleful dumps . The man of honor will do his best To make the world better , with zeal and zest ; The discouragements of life he conquers and jumps . Not so with the man of-the doleful dumps . The man who is proud of his ancestral name Will gladly bear poverty rather than shame The parents who bore him ; of racepride hes bumps . Not so with the man with the doleful dumps . The man of knowledge will eventually rise Above the deep mysteries of earth and the skies ; But what is the hope of the miserable gumps Who get to be men with the doleful dumps ? The man with the dumps , be he Lazarus poor . Or be he a millionaire with gold galore . With muck-rake in hand , from life s misery pumps , This , wretchedly blue man , the man with the dumps . The man with the hoe —all honor to ...

[ HOUSEHOLD [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 23 February 1907

[ HOUSEHOLD A FEW HINTS ABOUT DRY CLEANING . In the first place it Is not dry cleaning at all . The term Is merely used to designate cleaning that is not done with soap and water . Before cleaning articles by the dry process , they should be carefully gone over and all stains removed . Any small tears should be mended , for they would probably grow larger in the cleaning process . And then the goods should be thoroughly brushed , and , if advisable , steamed . The steaming should be done by means of a damp cloth and a flatiron . If the goods will permit of it , the brushing should be done with a brush or broom dipped in half-strength ammonia , but care must be taken in using ammonia on animal fibres . Many grease stains can be best removed with soap . Oleic acid used sparingly is also useful in removing oils ; or a blotter may . be put under the stain and a cloth , dipped in benzoin , rubbed over it . The blotter will THE TALLEST OFFICE BUTLDINT 3 IN THE WORLD . absorb the oil loose...

FIELD POTATO CULTURE . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 2 March 1907

FIELD POTATO CULTURE . —_ = ^ = = — By J . F . KELLE . R ., Licking County , Ohio . = = = Special Article Number 5 . In my early boyhood the potato crop on most farms was represented by a few rows planted ln the garden , or possibly the area devoted to this crop in n fpw oases may have reached even two acres . The farmer who had the backbone to tackle two acres of potatoes was looked upon as a bonanza potato grower . The mere mention of the potato patch , as usually designated , filled the youth of the farm with forebodings of backache , incident to handhoeing , hand weeding , hand digging , hand soiling , etc . In this early history potatoes were not looked upon as a commercial crop to any extent . The planting was gauged by the probable needs of the community . If the season was propitious they secured a regular place in the bill of fare . If otherwise , they became a luxury , as the only available supply was drawn from some more fortunate neighbor , if indeed . any could be found...
