ROOSEVELT AND RURAL , ROUTES . [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 July 1903

ROOSEVELT AND RURAL , ROUTES . President Roosevelt s assurance that rural mail delivery is not to be checked on account of the postoflice frauds will give satisfaction to the country . No more new routes can be established during the present month , because all funds for this fiscal year have been exhausted and a small deficit has been incurred . But on the 1 st of July $ 12 , 000 , 000 will be available , which iwlfl . give the postmaster general $ 1 ,- 000 , 000 a month to maintain and extend the service . GEO . S . PRINE , OSKALOOSA , IOWA . President , American Berkshire Association . miles long ; let 20 , 000 sheep follow them , bleating along 12 miles of road ; after them drive 16 miles of hogs , 27 , 000 strong ; then let 30 , 000 fowls bring up the rear , clucking and quacking and gobbling , over a space of six miles ; and in this whole caravan , stretching for nearly 50 miles and requiring two days to pass a given point , you will see the animals devoted to death in the packing houses of Swift & Co . in a single day . KV . W TMMTrjTJ ATTDTV [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 July 1903

KV . W TMMTrjTJ ATTDTV Attention has often been directed to the revolutionary change in the charactor of our immigration within the past few years . The nature of this change is somewhat disguised , however , by the form in which the statistics are usually presented . When we are told that Italy , Austria-Hungary , and Russia sent us over 70 per cent , of all the immigrants we received last year , we have not advanced very far toward an understanding of the real nature of the phenomenon . It is true that we should naturally assume correctly , that most of the immigrants from Italy were Italians , but it is also important to know that six-sevenths of the Ijtalian immigrants came from southern Italy and SUily , one-seventh from northern Italy , and practically none from central Italy . The inliux from Austria-Hungary is almost as great as that from Italy , but it is so split up racially that the aggregate figures mean absolutely nothing . Out of 171 , 989 arrivals from the Austrian Em...
