4fURDAYE S2.. 1$74. THiE STAGE DRIVER. (The following truthful portraiture of life on the stagec-h.x is from WaFner's " Baddeck and that Sort of Thing" in the Atlantic Monthly. We are almost tempted to believe that Mark Twain, Warner's tnext door neighbor at Ilartfold, had something to d, with it. M. There are few pleasures in life equal to that of riding on the box of a stage-coach, through a country unknown to you, and hearing the driver talk about his horses. We made the intimate acquaintance of twelve horses on that day's ride, and learned the peculiar dispositions and traits of each one of them, theirambition of display, their sensitiveness to praise or blame, their play fulness, the readiness with which they yielded to kind treatment, their daintiness about food and lodging. May I never forget thespirited little jade, the off-leader in the third stage, the petted belle of the route, the nervous, coquettish, mincing mare of Marshy Hope. A spoiled beauty she was; you could see t...

SATUIRDA) Y, AI, Y 30, 1874. FROM WEST TO EAST. WITH NOTES ON THE SIDE. The face of your corrcspondent is yet I "ferninst" the rising sun. Illinois and In diana have been left behind and Ohio pene trated, since I' last wrote you. I am making an awful effort to reach the East coast, as it is the cheapest way home-the far West being reduced proportionately as the dis tance East is increased. There is but little difference in the cost of a railroad ticket from New York to San Francisco and one from Omaha to Ogden. Consequently, when you wish to travel West cheaply you must go as far East as possible to make the start, and rice rersa. I have been advised to go to Liverpool, as a ticket from that point to the West is only a matter of a few I shillings. But a natural distrust of salt water, sharks, whales and lengthened steamships, will prevent me from going down to the seas in a ship for the sake of saving a few dollars. Istoppcd several days IN ('Itilt'AGO, Saw and admired the new and w...
