Tarde, a French author, formu lates ihe result of his studies in a book which he calls "Comparative Criminality." The following para graph is from his work : "By its straight forehead and nose, by its mouth regularly and gracefully curved, by its chin never too prom inent, and its small ear close to the head, the cla...

The transference of capital from one part of the world 10 the other ;zs one of the most notable financial events of our time. For the past 3rear or two we have been hearing of English syndicates biding Amer ican manufacturing plants and pay ins almost incredible prices for them. Solid cash is paid for some of them, and it is one of the puz zles of the day to know where the money received has been reinvest ed. Other English capital is going into Australia, South Africa and the Argentine Republic, although not as far as we are aware, to anything like the extent that it is coming to America. The darlniess became as great as it ordinarily is on a clear night. Candles were lighted in houses, and many superstitious people wc:;o great ly alarmed, dropped their labors, and betook themselves to religious devo tions. It appears thai, with regard to the state of the atmosphere preced ing this uncommon darkness, it was noticed in many sections, for several day 3 before, that ths air seemed to be of smoky and vaporous character. The sun and moon exhibited an unu sual color, and divested of their usual brightness and lucid aspect The time of the commencement of this ex traordinary darkness was between the hours of ten and e'.even in tho fore noon of Friday, and continued until the middle of the following night. Tlie question regarding the Cath olics and the schools as it turns up on the dispotion of the Roman ec clessialical authorities to force all the. children of Catholic parents in to the parochial schools comes up in a new and somewhat portentous form in New Jerseys An amend ment to the State constitution is proposed there whereby it shall be made unlawful for any person or any power, local or foreign, to attempt, by the use of coercion or dictation, to compel the attendance of chil dren upon an particular school, or to compel, on the other hand, their absence from an particular school.
