CZ3 he gailtf tfottuw. ASTORIA, OREGON: FRIDAY.. OCTOBER 2L 1884 THE SECRET OF BLAINE'S SUC CESS. The unprecedented success of Mr. Blaine as an Ohio canvasser has had the not unexpected result of calling much attention to the man personal ly, and in spite of all that his polit ical enemies could do to affront him and destroy the effect of his appear ance and speeches, he has made friends by the thousand wherever he presented himself. Yet, for the most part, he has eschewed, in his speeches, the active discussion of the political questions of the day, trusting to that indirect consideration which, consist ing as it does, in the laying down of those vital principles which are the foundation stones of all political dogmas, is not only more dignified, but is far more convincing to all but the lowest classes of an audience likely to gather to listen to a polit ical address. But it will be noticed by those who have followed the great Eepublican leader in his tour through New York, Ohio an...

-f m he g)Mh dorian. ASTOKIA, OREGON: SATURDAY OCTOBER 23, 18S1 SOCIALISTIC COXDITIOXS. From the writings and speeches of a certain class this fall it would ap pear as though there were a certain well-defined antagonism between those who have and those who have not, and that those who have are some way dealing unjustly with .those who haven't. It is not to be denied that those who possess a little capi tal hare advantage over those who do not, but it is an acquired and not an unfair one. It is just as easy for those who have it not to acquire it if they but comply with the necessary conditions. Take two men tilling the soil, one of whom uses his hands or stick, while the other has a horse and a plough; two men in conflict with a wild animal, one of whom has only a stick or a stone, while the other has a repeating rifle; two men who are sick, one of whom can travel, command medical skill, get space, light, air, and water, while the other lacks all these things. This does not mean tha...

. Czj fa gaitjj toran. ASTORIA, OREGON: SUNDAY- OCTOBER 23. ISM THE SHAME OF IT. The campaign of smut and brutal attack draws to a close. But one week more remains in which to attack the unfortunate men who are wading through a nasty current while a nas tier deluge threatens to submerge them. To outsiders, reading parti san journals, it would be a question whether Blaine and Cleveland were running for the presidency or the penitentiary. One is a thief and a blackguard; the other is a blackguard and a thief if the party organs are to be believed. It is the penalty that prominence pays for power; it is the punishment assigned to the man that is of sufficient importance to be sing led for attack. The mediocre, the un available, the unimportant are mer cifully spared. It is only tho best and bravest that are crucified on every by-way in tho nation. The sew ers are open and the scent of the rot fills the air. An outsider, if he read the American newspapers since the presidential conventi...

m z gattjj gtorfan. ASTORIA, OREGON: TUESDAY ....OCTOBER 28.18SJ NEXT TUESDAY The presidential contest -will be virtually decided next Tuesday, though the electoral college will not make formal choice until a month af ter the popular election. In a week a country having not lesst han fif ty" five millions of people -will decide who shall be the chief magistrate for the nest four years. The content is really betw een two political parties. The minor parties make but a small figure in the canvass. Gen. Butler is managing his political circus with his usual adroitness. He is rich and dearly loves notoriety. He is able to pay 3150 a day for a palace car to convey him to the various cities and towns where he addresses "his con stituents." . He does not expect to be elected. But he makes a figure in politics because he has a miscella neous following, which will come largely from the state of New York, where he is making a vigorous can vass. It now looks as if the results of the election w...

Times and the World announce that Blaine Republicans, despairing of success in Now York, have resolved to abandon the state to the Democracy and apply the money which was to be expended there to on attempt to win New Jersey, Connect icut and Indiana. The Paris Patrie says it is proba ble, in the event of the failure of the active overtures of England in the direction of mediation between France and China, that reinforce ments of 20,000 troopa will be sent to unina, witn a view to occupying Canton.
