On the 21st of hist month 1,400 bills were introduced in the lower house of congress. They were referred to vari ous committees. Such a day's work was never done in the National legis lature before. Not only va3 the number of bills enormous, but the titles thereof, showed an amount of misdirected ingenuitj7 in attempting what is either silly, vicious or impos sible, which should not exist outside of a lunatic asylum. The measures which are thus characterized did not origin ate with any particular parry. Some were by democrats, some by republicans and others of the worst by the greenbackers. Some of them in volve such large interests that they promise to bring on a long session and general legislation. A few days ago, iu the course of a conversation with one of the most prominent gentlemen identified with the business of Portland, we were in formed that lie and his associates h;.d tried repeatedly, for a full quarter of a century, to get a hold and become identified with Astoria interests, but had been defeated every time by ex actions, threats of law suits, etc., etc., which they could not, and woid not tolerate. We regretted the fact; and have since learned that Gar. Alien tried hard to secure property here many years ago, in the interest of the steamship company. Finally went to St. Helens, and lastly to Portland which made that city. A new era is now about to dawn upon this city. Let people be liberal now, else we go over ten, fifteen or twenty years be yond the present, hoping against fate. .This is a matter plainly submitted for careful consideration. Texas Society. Egbert, the first king of all England, ascended the throne in 827, exactly 1,010 .years be fore Queen Victoria's accession, and now as though England had not per plexity enough with wars to the east of her, wars to the south of her, and "over-production" at home, someone has set an impertinent interrogation point after the Queen's legitimate title to the throne. The argument is as follews: Francis V, of Modem, head of the house of Stuart, had one brother, Ferdinand, and two sisters, Maria Theresa and Mary Beatrice. Ferdinand married a daughter of the Archduke Joseph, of Austria, Pala tine of Hungary, and died in 1S...
